Hi Nick,
Not sure why you are having problems, but if I can remember back about 10 years ago when I used to connect a couple of PC's together for muliplayer gaming, you used to be able to buy crossover ethernet cable to directly connect 2 PC's without having to buy a hub.
I may have remembered incorrectly, but the hub effectively acts as a crossover switch, so a normal ethernet cable couldn't connect 2 PC's directly, it needed a crossover ethernet cable which looks exactly the same as a normal ethernet cable.
The fact that you can connect directly avoiding the hub may be that your cable is a crossover cable, and thats why it doesn't work when connecting to the hub.
Have you got any other cables you can try ?
It is a long time since I did this so hopefully someone can follow up on this for you and confirm or correct this post.
Good luck,

Turns out, i was able to get the two items to talk to each other when connected to each other directly via ethernet, but when i put the xbox360 into the router via ethernet and the laptop via wireless, they can no longer see each other.
When I then connect the laptop to the router via ethernet also, they can then see each other.
so am I right in thinking that the only way to have them talking to each other is to have them both connected to the router via the same way, ethernet or wireless (not one of each).
