Standard DVD conversion for external drive

Hi all,
I've been trying many different converters to backup my standard DVD's to external hard drive for playback on my Xbox 360. So far quality and file size have been my main issues. I'm trying XviD4PSP 5.036 currently. Does anyone know what the best settings in it are for file sizes between 800MB and 1.2GB? But quality must be equal to sDVD. I believe H.264 is the best format, and that this version of the app can output it. I don't mind long conversions that use 2-pass settings. I'm not tied to XviD4PSP, just next in line to try - just want the best quality for my xbox at that file size. If any other suggestions are made, please include settings, it would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Standard DVD conversion for external drive

I'm having similar problems with converting files using Any Vieo Converter.

It seems whenever I convert something that won't play on the 360 or PS3 it comes out pixelated or in a strange milli-second jumpy way.

I've tried .264, avi with mpeg 2 and 4, tried reducing the resolution too. Not sure what else to try really. I couldn't get the .264 to play at all, I'll have to try a different codec.

One of the files is originally an MKV.

Just can't seem to convert anything that won't play and keep it nearly as good as the original.

Im not sure if this subject is allowed here but Ive found handbrake to be a very good converter and its free.
I find mp4,h264,acc at about 2000 bit rate keeps files to around 2g with great quality but im also open to suggestions.

It doesnt copy protected dvds itself so hopeflly I havnt incured the wrath of the mods.

I never tried changing the bit-rate as I wasn't sure how it would affect the output. I'll try that now cheers.

Failing that I'm going to give handbrake a go because I've heard good things.

I also recommend Handbrake. There are default settings for Xbox 360, PS3, iPod etc. So no messing with settings needed. It's free as well which is a bonus.

Re: Standard DVD conversion for external drive

I couldn't get a good result at all using Any Video Converter. Once I managed to get the picture sorted the audio became corrupted without changing any of the settings

Handbrake next.
