Xbox 360, Windows 7, Media Player 12 Streaming

Hi guys,

I'm in a bit of a pickle at the mo and any help would be much appreciated.

I recently installed Windows 7 on my laptop and along with it came the new Windows Media Player 12. The problem i'm having is with streaming video and music files to the Xbox 360.
My firewall is Comodo and this is set up fine as it allows me to connect to Xbox Live and my Xbox shows that it can connect to the laptop fine. I also tried closing down Comodo and the problem I'm having persisted to I know it's not that.

I have done an extensive search of the Internet and now have Media Player set up to share my library with the Xbox 360 with no restrictions. However, when I go into the Video or Music section on the Xbox 360 I can see the folders and files that I am sharing via Media Player 12, but they just won't play. It won't stream the video or music. For video it comes up with the following error:

'The connection to your computer was lost. Make sure your computer is turned on, connected to the network, and running media sharing software.

Status Code: 53-C00DF238'

A search on the code doesn't find much apart from one person stating that the ethernet connection to their xbox had made itself public rather than private. Mine is shown as public and I can't quite figure out how to change it with Windows 7, which annoys me.

What I don't understand is if it can see the files and knows that they are being shared, why won't it play them? Is this a Media Player 12 or Windows 7 problem that anyone else is having? All the video files show up as having the cannot play icon (Circle with line through it).

I'm thinking that it has to be something to do with either Windows 7 or the new Media Player 12 as I have the exact same setup on Vista and that works flawlessly.

Other things to note would be that the file types for videos are all AVI (Xvid) and I connect the xbox and the laptop together via an ethernet cable rather than wireless.

I haven't tried using Media Centre yet as an extender because I'm not a fan and would rather not use it, but I might give it a try.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Chris

Re: Xbox 360, Windows 7, Media Player 12 Streaming

Is the 360 connected to Live?

If it is then ignore me, but I had the same error code at the weekend due to no Live access becuase of a fault at my exchange taking down my broadband. Couldn't stream anything from Win7 to the dash and Media Center told me I had to be signed in to Live to use it so kept failing.

Broadband back up Monday morning and all streaming working fine again.

Wow I have the same specs. I got Windows 7 rc 2 days ago and have comodo firewall also. I connected to my 360 which was online and it would'nt allow me to see the files. It keeps on saying an unexpected error occured. I have an IBM thinkcentre with 3 GHz, 2 g's ram, 120gig HD, and a 896 mb video card(nvdia). Not sure what ur specs are but it's clearly something I'll be working on. I'm not sure but maybe it's cause you were trying to acces illegal files also. I was trying to acces VUZE and convert the files but for some reason it still gave me the unexpected error. Best of luck though.

Me too, sorta, and I'm having the same problem, Windows 7 to xbox 360, The only difference is my virus protection is Norton. What I don't understand is, My playstation Streams just fine through the same setup, so It has to be a problem with our xbox's.. wouldn't you think? If you figure it out let me know, cause I have tried and tried, with no avail

Go to networks on your PC. Eventually it will load and show a picture of an Xbox 360. Right click and hit "Allow Streaming To This Device".

If it doesn't show the 360 hit Ctrl+R to refresh.

Alternatively paste this in Windows Explorer.

Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Media streaming options

You will see a list box, select your 360 and select Allow.

Have you made the music shareable to the homegroup?

Go to your media library, presumably in Music, select all, right click and Share with Homegroup Read or Read Write.

Assuming your music is MP3, WMA, WAV they should work fine. But I don't think the 360 can stream AAC or other Apple formats.

Question

The files are of MP3 format, and for the Homegroup, the xbox itself is not Windows 7 so it says it cannot home group it.. Any other Ideas?

Share with Homegroup generically shares the files, not just with the homegroup. It is slightly badly named, I think MS are trying to push the Homegroup thing so changed all sharing to be Homegroup.

In order to share to my PS3, 360 and DLNA TV I had to first share the files with the Homegroup. The advanced right click sharing and security menu probably works to, but that is alot more clickin.

Have you setup a Homegroup? Because you don't need any PCs in it, but you do need to set one up.

Is this a fresh install of Windows 7 or an upgrade from Vista, because it sounds like some of the sharing stuff didn't go right.

I don't really know how to help, other than to get it working all I did on my PC was make a Homegroup, then select all my music folders and hist Share With Homegroup Read/Write.

I also allowed the 360 the way I advised earlier and then it all worked.

Yea.. its an upgrade to 7 and I would be willing to bet your right..., so how would I go about fixing this? by wiping it and starting over from vista? then upgrading to windows 7?

PS you've done a lot in the way of helping and i Appreciate it.

You could try doing a repair by booting into the installation DVD, this will just make sure no system files are dodgey, though you should do a full backup of your files just in case.

But first, I would go to WMP12, go to library and highlight everything. Hit Delete, then make sure you choose Remove From Library only, you don't want to delete all your music. I would back-up all your music first just to be safe.

Then go to your music folder, highlight everything and drag it into the WMP12 library. This will recreate your library.

Then in WMP12 hit the Stream button (near the search box).

Then 'More Streaming Options'.

Hit Choose Homegroup and Sharing options. At this point I can only advise based on the screen I get.

Make sure you have Music, Videos checked, if that doesn't work try the share with all devices on my network.

Make sure you Save Changes.
