Hi,

is there an optical connection on the hd player for surround sound etc? or does it not need one

The HD DVD drive only has a USB output for connecting directly to the xbox 360 console. You will then get 5.1 sound out of the xbox as you would when playing games or DVDs in the internal disk drive - via the HDMI or optical connections.
