Damn xbox360 just had a turn

Recently found that after playing for 10-20 mins the picture would go funny - ie blurred and fuzzy - resetting the console did the trick - for maybe 30 mins to an hour

Today tried turning on the console and immediatly screen went fuzzy then black with white dots ??

Tried it on a different TV - same result

I can hear the sounds fine - just no picture
Rang xbox support - they want £80 ish to fix it

Is there any self repair I can do ?
I know of the oven & towel trick - not sure if they are suitable in this case though - anyome got any useful advice /

or am i forced to go out and buy a new console

Dodged ANA/HANA chip. Short of opening it up and resoldering the board you can't fix it.

how old is the console, if its less than 3 years just lie and register an online repair but state that it has 3 rrod.

better chancing your luck than forking out 80quid. I have the same issue as you did the heatgun and xclamp fix. Worked fine for about 90hours then it went again. used the heatgun again but it was gone for good.

the console is a core from around launch and out of warranty

Hmm looks like i'll have to fork out for another console - wonder if there are any good deals out there ?

TBH if didn't have 11 months on xbox live and a stack of games iwant to finish i wouldn't buy another out of principle - this console is just over 3 years old - they should last longer than this .
I have a PS2 and even a PS1 going strong - so why the hell do new consoles not last ?

Now do i buy another core and keep my bits or buy an elite and sell the old bits - decisions decisions !

Do you have a Hard drive, if so just buy the Arcade. Make sure its the Jasper version.

Jasper is the new chipset that is meant to run cooler, quieter and faster

eg its been revised to use 65nm engineering so "should" solve some of the problems

Ahh thats good news - i thought the latest was falcon.

One question though - how do you know if its a jasper and is it only available on the arcade version or all versions ie elite etc as I was thinking of upgrading to 120gb too

all shops should now be selling jaspers (assuming they moved their old stock of older chipsets)

falcon was halfway to jasper with only a 65nm CPU not GPU
as above the jasper is 65nm CPU and GPU

there are many ways to check

a common way that i strongly do not advise is to open the xbox up (this will void your warranty so do at your own risk)

other ways are checking power consumption on the power brick, looking on the sticker on the back for the power ratings on there etc

there are lots of ways to identify them, mostly you want one with the latest manufacture date - see this thread for more Jasper info and where they are known to be Xbox 360 Jasper Console (Speculation & Info in here please)

The no picture but sound is repairable if you know what your doing but afterwards you have to fit Talismoon fans in order to prevent it heating up to much, Ive fixed a few with these errors

Easy to fix, all you need is an hour or two and a £3.50 xclamp kit from ebay -
mine is going strong after replacing the 4 bolts on the GPU - pretty simple process loads of guides online

if it does not work you've gained an educatiobn looking inside at the bits (very basic really) and lost a couple of hours and a couple of £

if it works its majorly rewarding!!!

its a computer its all the 360 is so if you can do computers 360s shouldnt be too hard

Hmm - quite tempted to have a go fixing the console - just built a quad core machine so I think i'm competent enough

I've googled the guides on how to fix - but which one is a good step by step guide to do the repair - a lot of guides tell you a bit then expect you to pay for the rest

Also do i need to buy the mod kit from ebay ? -I read somewhere you can use washers and longer screws etc from B&Q - or is the kit the best option ?

Only other consideration is.......


...went in today to game / hmv - both were offering £60ish for a core console
A new arcade is £130 ish i believe - but both were willing to let me trade in the game you get with it as pex - ie reduce the console cost - i could therefore get a new console for £50ish - more than likely jasper console

or I could get a 60gb premium for £170 and trade in my core , 20gb hd spare controller and games etc and get the console for £60 ish but would end up with a 60gb hd ? - however not sure these would be jasper

Mind you need to get the console working - do you guys think the towel trick will get the console to work so I can trade in - or even if it goes RROD I can send in to MS for repair
