Weird "disc dirty" error

I'm not sure if I should be worried about this one.

I was playing Gears (1) on Saturday night and out of the blue got a disc dirty message. I didnt lose any progress so I'm guessing it happened immediately after an autosave. What made this so weird is that I was playing from the HDD! So I'm not sure what happened, I see 3 possibilities

1. Dodgy HDD, it is relatively new so may have an inherent fault.
2. Does the 360 make random checks against the disc? Not that I was aware of any problems with the disc.
3. Its a bug in the game that for some reason triggered an incorrect error status.

"Dirty Disc" error's tend to be linked to an impending RROD in my experience.

Probably not what you want to hear, sorry...

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

hmmmm, RRoD I dont mind too much as I can just send it back to MS, I'll be more bothered if it decides that its going to continue giving dirty disc errors.

I've had a scout around and along with the impending RRoD it seems some people have had success with clearing their cache (specifically if the problem was with gears). Thinking about it, I had downloaded a few demos and the divx update just the day before

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

I've never seen read errors on an installed game. Strange one.

Do any other games do it? Or is it just GoW?

On the game splash screen in the My Xbox section of the dash, did you press Y to play the game from HDD? As I think if you just press A it plays from the disk as normal. Not 100% sure on that mind you but I was getting errors playing Fallout until I reset to dash and then pressed Y to play it.

I've installed Skate2 and no matter how I start the game, it always plays from the HDD. You can tell by the lack of noise and faster load times.

As codehead says its automatically plays from the HDD, all in wonderful blissful near-silence

Its only happened the once, I just thought it bizarre, I'll see if it happens again and update this thread.

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

Could be a corrupted file when you first installed the game, not sure if they do a full CRC check on the copied image. You're best bet is to make sure the disk is clean, delete then reinstall and clear the cache. Any further problems and I'd be worried.

I see. I must have had a dodgy install of Fallout 3 then.

That's good to know it will always play from the HDD though, will save me a few button presses in the future

One of my mates is having the same problems. He's got Fifa 09 installed on his HDD and it keeps crashing and telling him the disc is dirty (or can't be read) -weird...

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

Have you tried deleting the game and then reinstalling it?
Might be caused by a read/write error on the HDD.

Simon

I've seen the message once (since the launch day for the 360) and my machine died the very next day. Coincidence I think not. Hope yours isn't the same buddy.

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

Had this happen to me on a number of games Dead Rising and GTA4 being the ones that come to mind. Tried playing from Hard disk and still get the same problem. However removing the hard disk and playing using a Memory card for storage works fine.
Keep thinking I should get a 120GB hard drive and see if it works the same.

Thought I'd give a quick update. Whatever it was it doesn't seem to have happened again so I guess I'll just put it down as a one off

I wonder if its happening when your 360 attempts to use the HDD cache. That would explain it happening whenever the HDD is present irrespective of where the game is played from.

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

My sons 360 had disk problems with COD5 (now cleaned up at Gamestation) and even though it was installed to HD it wouldnt play at all UNLESS you went into the games Achievements and played it from there , which would work.

Strange that one I think, looks like a kind of non disc checking method to run up a game. Not a ticket to install and never need discs though as you can get the achievments without the disc in

I also had Fifa installed to my 20gb drive , and that was awfull with missing
textures and all sorts. Removed it and it was back to normal.

Slim

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

The error resurfaced again last night. Coincidence or not, this time it was with Gears 2, twice it kicked up a Dirty Disc error and quit back to the dash. Strangely no other games have given me any problems at all.

I get the same thing with RE5, it loads up fine though

I got to select chapter, 1-1, then the item menu, click start and after a brief second of "loading"

dirty disc error on an installed game!

just picked the console up today too, second hand from gamestation, looks like its on its way back

Id say if your disc has a few scratches its transferring the data to the hard drive with them included, either that or its a bug in NXE's new toy.

it was perfect, it was taken out the xbox once, to exchage my xbox, which looks like it'll have to go back today because the only way to describe the RE disc is, it looks kinda warped

Got the error when I first popped RE5 in too, it was a brand new disk, checked it and there was the slightest smudge, wiped it off and it's been working fine ever since, really weird.

Re: Weird "disc dirty" error

Ive been getting this quite alot with Forza2 lately from HDD. Uninstalled it and re-installed it but hasnt made any difference. Strangely enough the 360 is now freezing while playing COD4 from the disc alot recently too.

Also had a random E71 error screen last night. I think my 360 is going down hill rapidly.
