Re: Surround Sound for xbox360

not to it directly, you would have to connect your xbox 360 to your surround system, with either optical, hdmi if it accepts audio over hdmi,or basic stereo phono..all done from the xbox 360 cable, as the hd-dvd drive is just a transport,it has no connections for surround.

Re: Surround Sound for xbox360

I've just got my speakers connected to the left and right audio connectors on the back of my TV (nothing coming from my Xbox).

Re: Surround Sound for xbox360

yep, the only way to get surround sound is to have an optical connection from the 360 to an amp. That's the squareish box on the side of the funny 360 ariel connector

Interesting, don't use mine as much as my PS3 but was thinking sound wasn't so good, at the mo Elite 360 with HDMI into TV, then, surround sound amp is connected to TV, will I get better then if I get another optical audio cable?

Re: Surround Sound for xbox360

Nope checked all round my 360 Elite there are no optical audio ports.

But I played an HD disc in the HD player to check and the sound comes out the surround system and it does ok.

360 connected to TV via HDMI then TV out via optical audio to amp.

TVs usually only output 2 channel so I'd guess that's all your going to get out of it that way.

Either buy the official AV box thing or crack open a Component or VGA cable and that way you can fit an HDMI cable alongside the Component/VGA and plug the optical in from there.

It's easy and you'll probably have the cable already.

Re: Surround Sound for xbox360

hey fifi, in regards to your problem i to have the same set up hdmi from elite to tv and optical from tv to amp, and its true you will only get a downmix of two channel audio like dolby pro logic as the display will give you on your amp will be all five speakers lit and sub. You cannot fit the hdmi lead as well as the chunky componet or vga cable in the back of the elite together as i tried, what you need to do if you want 5.1 surround is to either use component or vga or buy the new hdmi lead that microsoft have launched its £35.99 and it has a small box half way down the lead for you to attach an optical out for you to take direct to your optical in on your amp, similar to the chunky componet plug that goes in the back of the xbox. hope this helps in your matter, if your in england gamestation sell them behind the counter.
