My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

my 360 (1 year and 2 months) died yesterday with one red light and error message E74, rang MS and told me that i would have to pay for the repair. and they asked what game i was playing. so i told them cod4, which i found strange so the 'customer services agent' (reading from a script) so she said that it would cost me £89  because it was out of the warranty (the extended warranty only applies to a full red ring so beware)

so now iam thinking about going to the darkside and getting a ps3. free online play, blu ray and exclusive content. if playing cod4 is breaking 360's then its not worth the aggro. i could sell on my 360 games, accessories and hd dvds and with the money i was going to pay for a new 360 get a ps3

thoughts please

CoD4 isn't killing 360s, but there are a few games out at the moment rumoured to do so, Fable II, SR2 and another I can't remember.

Fallout 3

rather than the 89 quid there are other options, force it to 3 reds then book it in if its only a few years old its in warranty a few people have sent theres in as interment reds on the online booking and had them repaired too.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments

It seems, although not guaranteed, that if you send a console to MS that does not work, they will repair it for free if you said RRoD on the repair application.

MS only seem to care if you send them a voided or working 360.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

Quick Q.

I've heard it before that if you have sent a console to MS 2 or more times each time you send a console to MS they will give you free stuff.

How do you go about this, my second 360 has just been repaired after going through the online system, does this mean that if I ring up and say 'I've just had to send my second 360 in for repair and I am apauled' they will give me free stuff.

I'd quite like a second wireless headset .

What is the success rate with this, I don't want to spend hours on the phone and get nowhere .

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

Yeah to the original poster - just register the console on the xbox.com website and under the fault type put "intermittent RRoD". MS will email with a UPS collection date. Then UPS will take it to MS in Germany. This way you'll highly likely get it repaired for free. It'll probably take about 10-14 days from when UPS pick it up and when you get it back.

Good luck

I just got the E74 error do you think this is the best way for me having it fixed as £65-80 is a stupid ammount of money for a small fix. Whats the likelyhood of MS finding out that its the E74 error and not RROD. Should i try this method?

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

thanks for the advice guys my friend told me the same thing to 'bake' it. so i wrapped it in a couple of towels and had it on for 3 hours this morning and still the single red light (how long to bake it for)
so i thought i would take a chance on the repair from MS, i rang them and told them that it had gone to RROD (so that could count as intermitant) and iam waiting for the UPS guy to come. if MS won't repair it then i'll just buy a new one (nothing to lose really)

i'll keep you guys informed how i get on

I'm pretty sure they replace the mothereboard for all E74 and RROD repairs so its not a small fix. It cant hurt to try the method you quoted, worst case scenario you have to pay Microsoft to fix it or get it back not working still. I don't condone the action of course but you have a different perspective when you're the guy being shafted for footing the bill.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

nuts, looks like my Elite is on its way out. it freezes up and get pixelated but no rrod yet. and my gold account expires on the 4th of march. little effed offf since i was playing cod4 and was doing good.

this is my 1st elite but 4th 360, all from hmv and all replaced by hmv. had 3rd 360 that wasnt broken but said it was because hmv warrenty was was up in 1month and i think the consoles was already past. so made deal to trade that almost 1 year old in for elite for price difference plus they swiped my hmv game card for £300 worth of points-ah that was a good day.

on this elite date on the back says 2007/07/13 so its warranty is expired and also from hmv, think it was brought in nov 07. so guess ill wait till it dies out on me then send it in.

does it have have rrod or symptoms of it before i can send it in?

thanks

ps hope others get their consols fix quickly.

Get it booked in my friend, sometimes those Indians can be as helpful as a paper bag to hold your water in.
At least its gone RROD so you can get a free fix.

Own box, not original retail.

Don't need faceplate.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

i get mine sent back tomorrow.

with regards to the label they send you, the link they emailed me didn't work, and after 2 more calls one helpful chap told me the UPS link needed altering.
if it doesn't work replace the "%3D" in the URL (towards the end) with "=" and it worked.

just in case anyone else has problems

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

sorry for my dumb moments.
can someone tell me what this means, do i fold it up then use tape to stick it down on all the sides doesnt that cover the folded up part (ie closure)?
Quote:
affix the folded label using clear plastic shipping tape over the entire label. Take care not to cover any seams or closures.
once again sorry, i cant seem to think today.

btw got some boxes from work, just need to get rid of text on the outside of the boxes somehow, then its ready to pick up monday.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

The label you print off is a full A4 page.

But you don't need that, so what you do is fold along the line, it says fold here, so you are left with a ~A5 label which has the barcode etc.

Then you stick that to the box, but you must not stick it over any folds or seams in the box, the entire label must be on a single flat surface of the box, this ensures it does not get damaged and become un-readable

Generally I put the labels on one of the flaps on the top of the box.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

Hi guys.

My 3rd Xbox has RRoD'd on me. I got my last one exchanged at Zavvi (April 08), however as it has gone into administration, I fear things won't be a walk in the park. I rang a few Zavvi's in my area, but none of them had any 360's left. Does anybody have any advice?

I really do not want to send it off to MS. Would I be able to get an extended warranty out from GAME, even though I didn't buy it from there? And then use that to get the Xbox replaced?

Any help would be appreciated.

I really do not want to send it off to MS. Would I be able to get an extended warranty out from GAME, even though I didn't buy it from there? And then use that to get the Xbox replaced?

Any help would be appreciated.

Your stuck dealing with MS unless you do the obviously dodgy thing which involves spending some money and then un-spending it .

but are there serial numbers on box that match the 360? dicey tho.

@ify, to be safe just return it to MS. and im sorry but you cant get Games warranty, you can only get it if you buy/brought it from Game themselves, they check your receipt.

i even checked out D&G (we had tv cover with them) and they only cover upto PS2 consoles, no ps3 or 360. i dont know any other extended warranty companies.

Re: My Xbox is dead & faulty 360s FAQ comments #2

If anyone is interested:

I decided to ring all the Zavvi's in the North England area, to find out if anybody had any 360's in stock. Luckily, Sheffield Zavvi (Orchard Sq.) had quite a few. Unfortunately they were all 20GB, I wanted the newer one, but at least they exchanged my RRoD console. Kept my old (20GB) hard drive. It's dated 06-01-08, which means 1st June 2008, right?

I was thinking about exchanging it for a 80GB PS3 which they had at £250, so I'd have to pay £50 on top, then get an Arcade from Currys. That way, the 360 would be covered for as long as I wanted, and I'd have gotten a PS3 for £170!! But then again what if the PS3 broke down?
