3 lights of death help

Hi, my Xbox seems to be dead
A simple restart is no longer doing the trick and it refuses to live.
Problem is, upon registering my Xbox I have found it to be out of their 3 year warranty(?). I'm confused as I bought this brand new from Boots in January 2007, so it should be well within the 3 year period?

I've also struggled to speak to a person at Microsoft regarding this, so I was wondering if anybody can advise me about this 3 year warranty thing and also if there is a number for help.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 3 lights of death help

Check the back of the machine and post the manufacture date.

If your saying it's older than 3 years i'm guessing you bought a 2005 model in 2007?

Boots old stock?

If the manufacture date is after February 2006 then it's definitely covered.

Re: 3 lights of death help

If Microsoft really aren't interested then you can always approach Boots regarding getting them to replace the product under the SOGA. There is a thread on here with an example letter you can fill out to get them to replace it for free. Its not always simple getting it done but if you pesevere and know your rights then you should be fine. To do this method then you really need the original receipt or some form of proof of purchase.

The warranty they refer to on Xbox.com is the standard 1 year warranty for all faults, you will definitely still be covered for the 3 years for the RRoD fault despite this message. If you do go back to your retailer (like I'm doing), then there's help in the FAQ at the top of the forum.

Re: 3 lights of death help

Most likely the GPU thats shorted solder or a bad solder ball, what does your error code come out at?
Turn it on let it RROD, press the little circular sync button and hold it, then press eject 4 times, upon each of those 4 presses you will get a number of lights
4 lights = 0
1 light = 1
2 lights = 2
3 lights = 3

Post up the code and if you cant go through boots to get a refund there are other ways of fixing those 3 lights.

Re: 3 lights of death help

The 3 year thing is just a goodwill gesture from Microsoft.

The Sale of Goods act is much more powerful as it covers you for up to 6 years after purchase (5 years in Scotland) for an inherent fault (which RRoD is as MS have admitted it).

As mentioned already though, you would need proof of purchase (a bank statement is sufficient) and you would have to go through the retailer not MS as your contract is with Boots.

Hope this helps!!

Although it states out of warranty on the website, having spoken to them the other day they immediately accepted I was within the 3 years and are sending UPS to pick it up for a free repair/replacement
