Question RRoD One time only! Self-fixing? Return or not?

Hi All

First of all Sorry this is problem has already been posted, but I can't find it.

My 360 is 2yr 10mths old. One day last week I got the RRoD. Switching it on and off, usually fixed the problem for a few minutes at least, but then it would die again with the RRoD.

Since that day though I've not had any problems at all. Most people might think that's a good thing, but now I'm worried that I have a faulty xbox but I can't send it back to MS because I can't currently replicate the problem.

Does anyone know if MS will take it back just to have a look at the machine or will they only do it if it's permanently got the RRoD? I'm thinking it'll probably permantly go RRoD a day after my 3 yrs is up.

btw I have since tried to overheat the xbox deliberately to get it to RRoD, but despite a full day of playing with it wrapped in a towel, it never overheated!

Re: RRoD One time only! Self-fixing? Return or not?

Once you get it it generally comes at a later date, due to the deterioration of the solder.

Send it back, book it in online, and put intermittent 3 red lights. Many people on here have got theirs fixed this way.

Goo dluck.

Just a thought. You didn't by any chance just have the AV plug slightly loose and got 4 lights?

Maybe there's nothing wrong at all.

Nope definitely the 3 lights and I plugged and unpluged the AV lead a couple of times just in case cos I did have this 'problem' in the past.

Good luck.
Thanks, I sent it back and MS kindly replaced it with a brand new version manufactured on 20-12-08 and returned it with a week.

But the confusing thing is, is that this new machine still doesn't have HDMI and is using my original launch date power transformer.

So what board do I have now and how reliable is it???

Also does this mean my warrantries will now run from now so I have a year's standard warrentry and 3 years for RRoD? Or will they expire from the date of the original Xbox360 I bought?

They maybe replaced the unit with a refurbished 360 that they replaced the serial number on. In all likelyhood its probably a Opus motherboard but I'm not sure if you would be able to tell without voiding the warranty by opening it. There is a small chance it could also be a brand new unit that they took from old stock if they found old shipments that hadn't gone out before they started rolling the Falcons out.

But why would it have a manufacture date of Dec'08?

The xbox site says my warranty is due to run out on 5/10/09. Is this Oct'09 or the american format, so therefore the 10th May 09?

Re: RRoD One time only! Self-fixing? Return or not?

i believe you get 3 months warranty on repaired consoles so it should be american format eg may

i have not had a console fixed so do not quote me on that but its what i have heard

reagarding the new 360, there was something in the games news a while back of M$ using old cases eg ones with no HDMI port cut out and so the consoles were new enough to have the HDMI port but the cases were old stock

check the power rating on the actual console (by the manufacture date) and there are certain sites (sorry cant remember which at this moment) that tell you the meanings of it and how to spot the different types

Its fairly common that remanufactured machines have a new serial put on a old chassis or new if that was changed too. In the PC market you'd be surprised how often manufacturers resell ex customer faulty stock by giving them a new serial number and labelling them refurbished.

Re: RRoD One time only! Self-fixing? Return or not?

I guess they still have surplus of Xenons and Opus boards to get rid of so it could all be new old stock.

So I might actually have a HDMI port but it's just hidden due to the casing? Do Opus and Xenon boards both have HDMI?

The power rating is the same as the launch 360, as I'm still using the original transformer.

No, they don't solder on an HDMI port, but all the other stuff required for the HDMI port to function apart from the port is present.

Re: RRoD One time only! Self-fixing? Return or not?

they dont solder a new HDMI port as matt stated but some of the Xboxes originally had HDMI ports but the cases never had the cutout for them as M$ were using old stock

though this should have stopped a long time back as it was quite a while back therefore you probably dont have a HDMI port overall

on the back of the Xb what does the power ratings say on the sticker that has manufacture date and serial no etc on?

type out the power ratings/take a pic and that is how you know
