Xbox 360 Elite Vs Premium - noise and RROD likelyhood

Hi everyone.

I'm due to upgrade my AV system in the next month or so, part of which is to upgrade my original Premium console to either the new one or an Elite, in order to get the HDMI functionality. I have 2 questions to help me decide:

- Is there any significant difference in the console noise between the new Premium and Elite?
- statistically, is there one of the 2 models that seem to get more RROD cases?

I am struggling to justify spending more just for the larger hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated

The elite and the premium are the same bar the black case. Both as likely to get a failure as each other, although with a new Premium it will have the new chipset which reduces the failure rate.

Not sure if Elite's are shipping with it yet.

You could have either Delta or Nidec fans in either, real pot luck what you get. Nidec's are much quieter.

Me, i would go for a new Premium (Jasper). 60gb hd is fine in my opinion, and you could always change it later.

Nick, you seem pretty clued up on the techy side, why would they use 2 types of fan?? Is there any way of knowing what fans you have (without pulling it apart!) and is it possible to retro-fit the quieter type.

I wouldn't say its crazy loud, theres just a low pitched hum in the background. I usually wear headphones so its not an issue.

If you have a look in the back Matt the Nidecs are all black, the delta's have silver stickers on them with 'DC Brushless'.

Are you running off the hd as the drive is the majority of the noise.
