There is your problem - s-video uses the 'component' switch selection when plugging in the connector. For some reason the lead has been made with the 'HD' switch set to on - which is conflicting with the HDMI signal. (there is no point setting HD 'on' with S-video for obvious reasons ...)
If you use the standard component connector (set to SD) then it'll work fine - set it to 'HD' and I think you'll get the same error.
The elite has a 'dongle' which allows optical and L/R phono - I believe this is simply a normal 'elite/pro' lead just without the video cables (set to SD).
In short - your current S-Video lead will not allow both to work. That said, if you can open up the connector on the s-video lead and are handy with a soldering iron, then I can tell you which pins to disconnect to get it working (ie force it to SD - then HDMI will work ) ...
