Optical Output and HDMI????

I have a Panasonic 37PX80 and an XBox360 with HD-DVD player. Can anyone advise me how I can play my HD-DVD player via a HDMI cable and use optical output for my Amp.

Before the HD-DVD I had the XBox connected via HDMI and an adapted (taken off the plastic cover) Component cable with optical toslink cable and had no problems, but when I try a DVD or HD-DVD I get the message

"Secure HDCP link not found"

when I take out the adapted component cable from the back of the XBox the HDCP connection comes back.

My guess is the (really annoying) HDCP connection thinks I am copying the film or something.

Any Ideas how I can watch films AND have Dolby sound???

My Sony amp has no HDMI inputs so optical is only way of connection audio.

Never seen this before. Can you set the switch on the component lead to SD rather than HDTV? Could be something small like that.

There is your problem - s-video uses the 'component' switch selection when plugging in the connector. For some reason the lead has been made with the 'HD' switch set to on - which is conflicting with the HDMI signal. (there is no point setting HD 'on' with S-video for obvious reasons ...)

If you use the standard component connector (set to SD) then it'll work fine - set it to 'HD' and I think you'll get the same error.

The elite has a 'dongle' which allows optical and L/R phono - I believe this is simply a normal 'elite/pro' lead just without the video cables (set to SD).

In short - your current S-Video lead will not allow both to work. That said, if you can open up the connector on the s-video lead and are handy with a soldering iron, then I can tell you which pins to disconnect to get it working (ie force it to SD - then HDMI will work ) ...

Look at J2A1 - you need to break ID3-3.1 and enable ID2-2.1 ...

Re: Optical Output and HDMI????

Someone posted a link to the official xbox 360 HDMI cable in the bargains section as amazon were selling it cheap.

That cable seems to come with the dongle:

Xbox 360 HDMI Cable (Xbox 360): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

Not sure if that was the sale price or if it's gone back up in price.

You may get somone selling it on its own over in the classifieds though.

Re: Optical Output and HDMI????

I'm just wondering if the picture quality of HD- DVD's through the drive is better through HDMI rather than component. I've stuck with component as I too love having the DOLBY/DTS sound option.

( I can't imagine watching a movie without it these days! )

Any thoughts?

Best wishes
