Re: Best replacement fan

Unfortunately, best and quietest don't come in the same package.

Quietest = Nidec, the best (IMO) are the Talismoon Whisper's. I don't feel you need the Max versions now, as NXE= less heat, plus they are a fair bit noiser than the standard Whispers..

Re: Best replacement fan

Just looking into doing this for the machine I like to call the "satan" model (the fan noise is horrific) which I have at my mother's house for Scene It .

Anyone know a good place to get these? I don't really mind which ones as long as they're quiet. Oh, and if possible I'd rather turn off the LED functionality... it's a bit boy racer for a family machine!

Re: Best replacement fan

Which ones do you want? I have both the Talismoon's and Nidecs here. Can desolder the led's on the Talismoons if you want.

If it's silence, definitely get the nidecs.

Re: Best replacement fan

I assume the Nidec fans are an import job? I'm actually sort of tempted to grab a couple of quiet 60mm fans and go with a custom enclosure.

Re: Best replacement fan

The nidecs are standard in some 360's. MS don't use them too often, usually the Delta's, which are noisy.

I have them from one i fixed, straight from a UK 360.

Re: Best replacement fan

I'm thinking of getting the Nidec Fans for my 360 as the fan noise is really annoying! A couple of questions please:
  • I can't seem to find any comprehensive instructions anywhere on how to disassemble the 360 and fit new fans.
  • I have found some Nidec fans on ebay. Do they all have the same connector or are there different ones? I have an older non-hdmi 360.
Any advice appreciated.

If you want mate i can talk you through it. Your going to need torx 8 and 10, and a small flat jewellery repair screwdriver.

Re: Best replacement fan

If you don't have the screwdriver, you can use part of a dvd case. You know when you buy them on a spindle, the outer plastic.

What time are you doing it?

While you have it open, do this -

Xbox 360 – Cooling Modification

and get the xclamps off. Might aswell if you are to void the warranty.

This one is pretty good -

The Easy Guide To Opening The Xbox 360 | morehawes

The rubber foot he is talking about is the one near the ethernet port. Also i would just pull the faceplate from the right, not from the usb door. You don't need to remove the dvd bezel either.

Where he says torx 9, it's an 8.

Thanks for the links! Those guides look good! I haven't actually got the fans yet as I wasn't sure if the connector on them is standard or not. Do you know if the connector is standard? If so will go ahead and order them.

Re: Best replacement fan

Older 360's have a bigger connectors than the newer ones. I have spare adaptors should you need one.

I would imagine yours has the bigger type.

The ones I've seen on ebay are £14 including P&P. Is that good?

Re: Best replacement fan

Here is a little trick for opening the rear, i always use a small flat watchmakers screwdriver. This is great if you don't have one.

Re: Best replacement fan

Yeah but I already opened up my 360 to try the Whisper Max fans (they were no good imo, and I didn't like the gimmicky colours). You realise I do live in belgium? If you do have a spare set, I'll be happy to pay for the shipping of course!
