warranty, RROD and overheating

Just got a 60gb xbox and was thinking about the warranty that comes with it. The 'lad' in gamestation told me it had a three year warranty, but from what I can gather the extra two years is just for the RROD, which is fine I guess, although he did not make that clear - then again he gave me a second-hand copy of Fallout3 in the bundle (will be ging back in to see him tomorrow!), so I am not sure if I would have expected any more?

This got me thinking about the new Falcon models and the RROD and I was wondering whether this was a particular problem now? Have there been many failures with the new models or are they generally okay?

I am planning to stick the box in a tv cabinet which is closed at the front, but have it open when operating, leaving all the sides and back with some clearance for air circulation - I am presuming that this should be okay with the newer models.

Feel like I am rambling a bit, so sorry for that, but interested to hear any comments from more knowledgeable XBOX owners out there.

Thanks!

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

I have a falcon model and have never had a problem with it (touch wood) It seems to a bit of hit and miss if you get ROD.

None smoking environment and as much ventilation as possible would be ideal. Yours set up sounds ok, and reasonable.

Every new model they bring out will try and make it more stable, but i bet even if u put it in the fridge and ran it from there it would still get ROD.

Just frame that receipt incase you need it!

And about that guy giving you a second hand copy of fallout 3, it makes me laugh. When i purchased my console i got halo3 and pgr4 brand new. But didnt want them, so i asked to trade them straight away. They said "yeh the trade in price is £22 each" I was like WHAT! their brand new, they was like yeh they will be second hand now, i was like your going to give me £22 for a brand new game not taken out the plastic case and still sealed and sell them for £40. So said i was off else where, then they suddenly knocked off £70 for the 2 games :D

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Bless 'em

Don't normally like buying from the highstreet, but wanted it NOW! and liked the GOW1+2 and Fallout bundle, and the price was right (for me)....I should have smelled a rat when they took so long to find a box for the game, couldn't see any on the shelves when I looked......but when I got it home the box was dented, there was part of a seal still attached to the opening edge of the box, tears in the plastic sleeve and a round impression on the front where the pre-owned sticker would have been.

Was in a rush at lunchtime so should have paid more attention but had to get back to work. The disc looks fine and the instructions look pristine, but it is the principle I think, so will be going back to make a nuisance of myself tomorrow.....

Completely off topic, I tried to exchange a US DS game in there months ago and they wouldn't do it as they said they could not accept US games, I explained they were region free, and they continued to say they did not accept US DS games......so I showed them the Castlevanie NTSC US box that I had got off their shelf and they still said they didn't accept them

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Of the 85 or so known errors that give the 360 3 red lights, 60 or so are due to overheating. Unfortunately, the falcon is still unreliable, as the basic design is still the same, most importantly the lead free solder.

Running it in the fridge would be the perfect solution!

Having it in a tv unit is not ideal, but one of the reasons for the failures is the cooling as much as the heating up. Thats when a lot of the solder balls decide to up and leave. If you have a play and charge kit, plug it in towards the end, power off from the consoles power button, and you will notice the fans stay on. Have a feel back there after 2 minutes, and the air coming out should be cool. Worth doing every time, as leaving the hot air in the 360 contributes to the failure rate.

The reason they don't accept the US games is they don't have the UK ratings on them, so it's illegal for them to sell them.

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Cheers Nick

Will have a look at the play and charge kits - more expense!

I apprecaite that with the US games, but I was just trying to be a pain as they clearly had several US game boxes on the shelf.....I just get frustrated with so called experts......like the woman in Currys last week who was telling a couple of pensioners that they had to buy a £30 HDMI cable if they wanted to watch BluRay films.....but that is a totally different soap box!

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Will be fun to see how they react when I take back my second hand copy of Fallout!

Its all good fun really.........actually it is really annoying as I have put off unpacking the console in case I need to take the whole thing back to make a point!

Since the last update my fans stay on for 30 seconds or so after I turn it off.

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Hi mate,

Which branch of GS are we taking about here?

There is no way they should have NTSC DS games in any shape of form.

As peviously stated not only do they not carry BBFC or PEGI ratings Nintendo clamp down extremely hard on stores selling import games.

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Errr..don't want to start a witch hunt on GS stores....and it was a while ago so maybe was a one off?

CEX have taken them from me in the past though, so didn't really think about it?

Mind you I guess my profile would narrow it down a bit on the store front...

Re: warranty, RROD and overheating

Thanks for that - will have a look - and just have to turn the surround sound up!

Interestingly I went into Gamestation and the chap managed to rpoduce a sealed copy of Fallout3 immediately - popped out back and returned before the door had even closed behind him - which is interesting as it took the idiot on Wednesday about 5 minutes of wandering around the store before he found a used one.....oh well - alls well that ends well!

Oh well if i get RROD in the next 3 years I'll demand a replacement with a new Jasper

My house is so cold anyway, I don't think overheating will be problem!
