Does my xbox 360 have a fault??

Hi All

Right to cut a long story short - i have been given a core xbox 360. The previous owner told me they think its got the rrod.
I thought i would test it out and see for myself, using just the power supply. 4 red rings appeared.

Now, ive been told that it showed 4 red rings because i hadnt plugged in the video cables. when i did this everything seems fine.

The only thing i did notice is that the console made a funny noise like every minute. Not a major sounding noise-cant describe it.

Is this normal - are these consoles noisy or could there be something wrong after all??

Your help please

They are generally noisy but without knowing the noise you hear, it's hard to say for cerain that you have a duff one.

Re: Does my xbox 360 have a fault??

I think i know what you mean and it is normal, well, normal for my machine too! but, the RRoD might on ly be the early statges. Mine had the intermitent red rings a few times, maybe between 4 and 8 times or so in the week running up to its eventual death. Then it got it again and it stayed that way. If i were you i'd just play it as normal and see what happens. If it is RRoD'd then its still under warranty, for at least another ten days!

Ok ive just put a disc in the drive and it makes an awful grinding noise. It will play the dvd but the dvd stops for about 5 seconds every minute and makes the grinding noise again... I take it this is not normal and not meant to be like this then??

Is my drive on its way out? Will microsoft fix this free of charge like the rrod?

Re: Does my xbox 360 have a fault??

mines more like a loud whirring noise, and I mean loud. Ive only played a couple of dvds in mine cos im scared of busting my console (its bust now anyway, neva mind). However wen I have played dvds ive never experienced them stopping for a few seconds, I dont have a clue wots up with ur xbox but in my opinion that doesnt sound too healthy

Sounds like the laser assembly may need a clean. Balls of fluff/dust sometimes get caught at the end of the rails. Unless you want to open it there isn't much you can do to be honest.
