Help relevent to the dashboard update.

The new dashboard enables you to install your games to your hard drive to make the 360 much quieter when playing the games you install as well as impove loading times.

I've only got a 20GB HDD with my 360 and to install Far Cry 2 which is what I'm going right now it takes up 4.5GB of space. Along with a couple of demos and all my saved games I have no space on my hard drive to install any more games.

Obviously I need a bigger hard drive but what happens to all my saved information that's on the current hard drive if I were to buy a bigger hard drive??

Please help, I can't be the only one scratching my head about this.

The only real solution is to get a Memory Unit to copy the gaves from your old HDD to the new one.

The only other option is to swap the HDDs over to get to the saves, but then you would have to recover your gamertag everytime you do that.

I upgraded to a 120gb HDD last night. You connect the new drive to a USB port on the 360, pop in a CD and kick off a copy ( do something else for around an hour).
When it is done, switch off the 360, take out the old HDD and pop in the new one and away you go. All saves, downloadable data, demos etc. are copied to the new drive.

Re: Help relevent to the dashboard update.

Can the 20gb internal drive they supply be swapped for a 120gb HDD, if you use the same model as is sold in the retail 120gb drive?

So basically you're swapping the internal drive out. I know M$ have many tricks to stop you doing this kind of thing, but i didn't know if there was a working way of doing it?

Re: Help relevent to the dashboard update.

I forgot about the transfer kit.

The problem with that is all data on the 20GB will be erased. Also some reports state that it no longer comes with the 120GB and you actually have to ask MS for it, although that seems to be only if you buy from Game or Gamestation.

I am not sure if you can replace the actual hard drive inside the casing. I would guess that there would be hassle doing this.

Yeah, my 20gb one now has been formatted as part of the transfer.
Every 120gb model I came across had the transfer kit. Maybe it is something that they (MS) are phasing out.
I don't think that the 60gb version has a transfer kit though.

Re: Help relevent to the dashboard update.

You can replace the HDD but you have to faff around and you can only use either 20, 60 or 120GB even if you buy a bigger HDD.

Cheers that sounds good and sorry if I sound stupid but, how do I connect the new drive to a USB port? Does it come with some connector? Also "pop in a CD and kick off a copy" I don't quite understand that bit, a copy of what?

How do you get every single thing from one HDD to another?

Re: Help relevent to the dashboard update.

Hi, I upgraded to a 120gb HDD a while ago.

If you purchase a standalone 120gb HDD (I got mine from Blockbusters for £70), it will also come packaged with a transfer cable and disc.

All you do is connect the new 120gb HDD to the USB port on the back of the 360 using the transfer cable that comes with the 120gb HDD. You then insert the disc that also comes with the pack into the 360 and follow the onscreen instructions.

Everything was very easy to follow and it simply transfers everything that was on the old 20gb onto the new 120gb HDD in about 1 hour. You then simply remove your old drive and replace it with the new 120gb one. Now when you start the 360 up everything will be exactly the same as before except you will have about 100gb drive space free for all your games

You could then always sell your old 20gb drive (which will be completely wiped clean from any data during the transfer process) and the transfer kit (lead and cd) on ebay to get some cash back!

Alright thanks a lot, I need to look out for one that comes with all yours came with, which rules out buying online, I've had a look and it's so unclear. I didn't think Blockbusters sold things like that?
