Is my sound chip knackered?

Bit of a strange one this, only bought the console a couple of months ago so hope it isn't on its way out already(obviously if it is I'll have to wait until we move back next Feb before I return it to GAME which is where I bought it from).

It started off a couple of days ago when I received GoW2, fired it up and immediately noticed the sound was very crackly, distorted and kind of channeled(voices almost sound like they're spoken through tubes).

Thought it was either a fault with the disk or I'd blown my stereo or speakers somehow. Anyway, having spent ages fiddling around with connections, testing the stereo etc. and plugging the 360 phono plugs into the tv I've reached a confusing end........

It isn't the stereo or speakers as I get the crackling if I connect the phono direct the TV and have the sound coming through the tv speakers.

If I play cd's through the 360, or connect a USB device such as my phone to play music, it plays perfectly, no crackle or distortion(stereo or tv).

It isn't just the game disks, viewing the NXE intro I get awful crackle from the sounds and music, both when sounds is coming through the stereo or the tv speakers.

It almost seems as though there is a problem with any 5.1 source(hence why the cd's play fine), I have checked the settings and I am set to stereo sound so it isn't that. Oh, and it isn't anything to do with the new NXE dashboard update as I received GoW2 a day between I installed the new dash and that was where the problems started.

Anyone have any other ideas I could try, or does it simply sound as though my console has developed some sort of fault with the sound chip and will need to be returned?

Re: Is my sound chip knackered?

Try getting an official MS VGA cable and hooking up you're audio set-up with that. If that doesn't work, I guess you're just gonna have to wait until February

I'm currently using the official component cable, I have a third party VGA cable I could try using, although on this daft tv set you can only get HD through one of the component inputs so VGA gives me EDTV at best. Do you really think this could make a difference though? Obvoiusly has been fine up until now via the component connection.

Sadly no, sold my amp in preperation of our move back to blighty, hnce the reason I have it connected to the stereo using phono.

Just remembered I have a third party component cable somewhere in the flat, might try that one later just incase a problem has developed with the phono sockets of my official component cable. I do need to switch cables a bit as when I play with the Wii I like to have that through the stereo also(the tv speakers are crap).

Re: Is my sound chip knackered?

Just to update this thread in case anyone encounters the same probem.

It seems the sound chip of my 360 must indeed me knackered. Have tried connecting with another third party component cable(I normally use official) and a VGA cable, changed the phono cable(I have it exteneded) as well as the joiner. Nothing works sadly and the crackle continues.

Looks like I'll just have to put up with it now and quickly return it while still under warrenty when we move back to England next Feb.

Re: Is my sound chip knackered?

I've had the same problem since the update, its nothing to do with the cable.

No, it isn't cable related, but my problem started the day before I was granted early access to the NXE dash update so that isn't the cause for me either. Something just seemed to go at the time I first played GoW2(the first time I noticed the crackle was in the GoW2 intro video and has been like it ever since).
