Do some games stretch the DVD drive more than others?

I have read that the XBox 360 DVD drive can fail and that one of the symptoms is that it doesn't recognise a game disk and instead shows "Play DVD" on the screen.

Clicking play DVD than brings up a white screen with text in lots of languages saying put this disk in a 360!

I had this with Rock Band, but changing the game seemed to fix it. PGR4 did it a bit, but recently Mass Effect is doing it a lot.

It can take 10 - remove disk, clean disk, place disk back in - routines before it recognises it, but then its fine.

However Call of Duty 4 and other games work first time everytime.

So have I got a dodgy disk / or is the drive a bit dodgy and some games test it more?

I feel your pain mate!

I'm having the same problem with gears 2. My system now refuses to play it. I had the same issue with mass effect and forza!

Is you xbox old? If you search the internet, there's a lot of stuff on the limitations of the disk drive in older models. I think it's the thompson drives that are poor!

I'm selling/trading in my console and buyig a new model!

Best of luck!

i have had this from time to time, just turn off and on again and its recognized. the update this week should allow you to load part of the game to hd, this is why im upgrading to an elite for the 120gb drive, as it will mean less noise as the disc wont need to be spun all the time
