Eh?

The solder used under the chips on the motherboard is moving and then setting during average use, so when it got too hot either the cpu, gpu, or one of the 4 ram chips lost contact, and you got the 3 red lights.

It all cools down, contact is remade between chip and motherboard, and it works again.

In theory.

But once the solder starts it's shift, it needs reflowing, and the end is imminent i'm afraid.

Are you in warranty, as it will have to go in for repair?

The dashboard freezing is due to the solder balls unseating under the gpu, which will then give you the 3 red lights, and probably an E74 error.

I was hoping that the fact that it only RROD after turning it off and on instantly was the cause and triggered the RROD which mainly happens after what you wrote but i guess it can mean other things as it is an unknown hardware error message.

There's only a couple of unknown ones mate, the E74 is one of the most common, and certainly one of the easiest to fix -

I sent mine back with an intermittent RROD, it wasn't doing it when I sent it off and they just replaced it with a new (HDMI) console. It was back within 7 days - suppose it depends how busy they are etc. Best do it now, I've a feeling a lot of people will be switching on old xbox's when NXE arrives so they might get busy.

Re: Is there anyway of an xbox just curing itself after RROD (no towels though please

Mine RROD'd then came back to life. It was very short lived though and it died again within days, luckily I have a friend who is god of all things xbox, he did the xclamp fix and all was fine again, few months later got RROD again. He stripped the motherboard out, took all the bits he could off it wrapped everything but the chips in tin foil and stuck it in the oven for about five mins. Sounds scary but it's been fine ever since. Couldn't send to microsoft because of warranty issues.

Not a good move as you are baking the capacitors. The areas that need heating should be isolated.

Tell him to use a heatgun next time.

Right idea though

Re: Is there anyway of an xbox just curing itself after RROD (no towels though please

There are a few causes and effects that make RROD rear its head.

Placement of your console: if you put it on your carpet your asking for it to happen, in all honesty Microsoft didn't give it adequate cooling vents to vent the air out so it needs as much room to breath as possible.
Sometimes having it sideways on can cause it due to the weight of the CPU heatsink pushing down on 2 corners of the CPU chip.

Dust: this is not the Xbox's best friend lol!

Dropping your console: one way to cause it

The towel trick: lol if you try this your asking for your console to die.

The main errors are 2 red lights which is overheating, most likely fan failure or thermal compound breakdown between the heatsinks and CPU/GPU die's.

1 Red light E74 Which is cold solder of the ANA chip and requires reflow
There are other errors on this one light but thats the main one, others can include E64 which is a bad flash for those special kinda games.

3 Red Lights, CPU/GPU Solder balls loosing contact with the motherboard due to heat expantion and cooling contraction, can also be caused by your power supply not being plugged in snuggly and if you get 4 you might wanna plug in your av leads

Ive experienced all of them as I repair xbox's for a living
