Yes it does (didn`t think the fan would be so loud).
Cheers

Most of the noise is the DVD drive spinning mate, and yes it's normal. The new NXE dash update coming later this month will improve things because it will feature the option to install games to the HDD.

No problem.

The fans do make a noise but as you have the 60gb which is the latest model you probably have the quietest ones. But the DVD drive spins at 12x which is what creates the 'plane taking off' racket. You do get used to it though.

The interface for the 360 called the dashboard is being upgraded on Nov 19th (updated via Xbox live if you're connected). The new version is called the New Xbox Experience or NXE. This will feature the option to install games, you will still have to have the game in the console to play it but it will only spin once to confirm you have the disc, the rest of the time will access from the hard drive.

Hope your son is enjoying his Xbox.

Its a sad truth that its the first thing we all think of. I still wonder how the 360 got through initial R&D testing control without someone telling them to sort the bloody noise out... to be honest I can't believe they've not come up with a solution for it yet.

Re: Xbox 360 premium 60gb noise?

I think all 360's are pretty loud, mainly because of the drive but even the fans are pretty loud. I have a Falcon elite (one of the first) and it gets pretty hot too, and then the fans start to ramp up. Of course, still a whole lot better than the drive spinning but still too loud (esp compared to my PS3)

I'm always hoping an announcement from Microsoft about a revised Xbox360 with silent (slotloading?) drive and one big silent fan. So far, no success (I have a feeling Ms won't do anything about this, they just go for the cheaper route which seems to pay off).
