Question HD-DVD Drive to PC (Again)

Firstly, this will probably sound very samey! So Sorry!

Payday is coming up and been thinking about getting an Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive, cheap as chips and HD-DVDs £2.99 from HMV. Bargin

Right, I have an 8800GT, so thats HDCP. But my 19" Monitor is not, it has DVI and VGA, will either of these work. And what resolution will I get??

Not normally a poster, but spent a good few hours trying to accumulate all the info, and cant find anything concrete!

Cheers

Re: HD-DVD Drive to PC (Again)

I have the XBOX HD-DVD drive plugged into my 2 year old laptop and it works great. Definitely worth it for the cheap prices and the cheap HD-DVDs now.

As pjclark1 states AnyDVD HD allows the HDCP to be bypassed.

I would check what resolution your 19" monitor supports to see if it can take the full HD 1080p resolution as this would better for watching them.

You'll also need some software to play the HD-DVDs. If you already have Nero V8 software for CD/DVD burning there's a Blu-ray/HD-DVD add on for that that's quite cheap (< £20). Otherwise you need either Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra V7.3 (V8 no longer supports HD-DVD), Intervideo WinDVD 9 Plus or Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre (my choice).

Standard 19" monitors don't support the full 1920 x 1080 resolution of HD-DVD, whatever player software you use will downscale to suit your monitor.

As has already been mentioned, you might need AnyDVD-HD to get around the lack of HDCP on your monitor, however, as your graphics card *is* HDCP and if you use DVI to the monitor you might not need it (I don't on my system, which also has an non-HDCP monitor).

Cheers guys! Exactly what i was after, just wondering! Since I dont have 1080p res, will it downscale to 1440x900 or to 720p like the tvs 1360x768 (i think)

Thanks again.

The player software will downscale to 1440 x 810 (assuming 1440 x 900 is your monitors native resolution).

Or you could use VGA and HDCP compliancy wouldn't be necessary.

Re: HD-DVD Drive to PC (Again)

I did think that about the vga cable. Think I might run that, i like to limit the amount of software i have on the pc, try keep it clean.

But, any difference between vga and dvi. From what I have seen no, but is this different when watching HD.

Cheers

I have 2 identical monitors, but only got round to buying one DVI cable, so one is run through VGA (via a DVI-VGA adapter), and I really can't tell a difference. I usually look out for imperfections in things like this, and only expected to have to use VGA temporarily until I bought another DVI cable, but haven't got round to it, I just don't need to.

Although it may depend on the monitors and cables that you use.
