Lave loaded CoreAVC o to my Vista machine. Seems to have installed properly according to the CoreAVC support site. However when I load an HD DVD into the X-box 360 HD DVD drive nothing happens after the Anydvd scan of the disc.

Would welcome any assistence anyone can offer on this.

Afaik, it is just a video decoder. You need to get it working with player software. I tried to get it working with media player classic but nothing worked.

Thats the problem I'm finding. I'm trying to use it with Windows Media Player but so far no joy.

Has anyone had any luck with this combination? Do you need to do anything specific to media player to get it to work?

As I understand it CoreAVC is just a codec - it doesn't understand the layout/structure of an HD-DVD or Blu-ray disk.

You need to use something like AnyDVD-HD to rip the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray to a decoded media file on your PC and then play that with CoreAVC.

The software still needs to understand a HD DVD/Blu Ray as well.

So this is not an alternative to PowerDVD Ultra or WinDVD plus?

I don't believe so. It's a component of player software, not player software itself. To play HD-DVD or Blu-ray disks on a Windows PC still requires one of:-
- Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra V7 or V8 (V8 doesn't have HD-DVD support)
- ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre
- Intervideo WinDVD Plus V9
- Nero Showtime V8 Blu-ray/HD-DVD Video plug-in

I've tried PowerDVD Ultra V7 and found it unstable and unable to play a number of Blu-ray titles (despite a number of updates from Cyberlink support).

Nero's HD Video plug-in is the cheapest option, but I found it boderline on my Core2duo 2.2GHz PC with a GeForce 8600GT gaphics card (100% CPU, dropped frames and audio glitches).

ArcSofts TotalMedia Theatre performs well (35-40% CPU) and plays everything I've tried (Blu-ray and HD-DVDs) so gets my recommendation.

I've not tried Intervideo's WinDVD Plus.

Thanks cjed. Thats cleared that up for me. Looks like I'll need to take the plunge and buy TotalMedia Theatre.

There's a free-to-try version on the site - worth checking it runs OK on your system before spending money :-)

Arcsoft didn't work for me. My PC is underpowered by about 1ghz of the minimum specs for HD and both it and powerdvd stutter. However, I am getting great results with Nero showtime.

Wierd - exactly the opposite of my experience. I wonder if it's down to how the applications pick up and use hardware acceleration from the graphics drivers ?

Showtime works with and without acceleration. It is just Nividia Geforce 6150 onboard graphics.

same here - none of the above mentioned software programs performed as well and smoothly on my system as Nero Showtime - it was the clear winner.
