Firmware for hd drive via pc ?

Just wondering if it's possible to update the X-Box HD Drive without having an X-Box 360 console .
I have mine plugged into my PC via USB as it is great for not only playing HD-DVDs but also gives me two extra usb ports to attach my external HDD to.
I have tried with the cd rom but this is obviously intended for use with the xbox console.
I have updated dvd drives etc with firmware , can you do the xbox hd drive the same way or is it possible only when connected to the console ?

Hi Tobybunny
As far as I know you have to be joined to the XBox 360 and then connected to the internet with the 360 and any updates are automatically downloaded, or at least they were in my case.
I originally connected the HD Drive to my PC and could not get it to work at all
until I downloaded the drivers from the internet, even then I could not get it to play HD Movies. I cannot get the software player (Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre, which is supposed to be compatible) to recognize the Drive.

sorry to hear about your PC probs dougie , all i can say is it was recognised instantly by my PC ( with Vista ) and I use Nero Showtime with the HD plug-in ( the only software I have found which plays my blu ray and hd-dvd discs perfectly with no problems )

Re: Firmware for hd drive via pc ?

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I am using Win XP Pro SP3 with all the latest drivers etc,
but still no joy. I am retired (ancient) and cannot afford to upgrade to Vista but I will try again with ArcSoft.

Re: Firmware for hd drive via pc ?

as far as I'm aware the actual drive firmware isn't updated by the 360, only the hd dvd player software which is stored on the flash drive contained in the hd dvd unit, which is of course useless to a PC anyway, so I don't think there's really any issue?

XP doesnt support UDF 2.50 and so cannot read HD-DVD discs. You need to install it yourself.

There is a link on this page (UDF 2.5 reader) and other information.
