i am thinking of getting an elite xbox 360 as my original 360 is on its last legs (rrod). If i get the elite can i connect my original 20gb hard drive in order to copy over all my saved games etc?

Yeah, you need to get hold of the ms transfer kit though to do it, either via the 'bike' in the 360 forum, or via MS, once you have the elite, make sure to only use the 20gb drive on the elite till you do, as the transfer process wipes the 120gb drive I believe.
