Modding the xbox HD-DVD drive

I intially posted this in the wrong section so sorrys guys for the repeat post anways i was looking around the net and i came across and article which basically explained how to connect the xbox HD-DVD dive to you pc but also explained that the HD-DVD drive itself is only a normal sata drive which could possible be taken out of the whole caddy thing it comes in and be put in your pc . That got me thinking , i was wondering now that LG have produced a combo drive that plays both hd-dvd/blu ray movies and is also sata. cant i just remove the existing drive out of the enclosure pop the combo drive and change the bezel and voila id have a xbox drive that would play both blu ray and hd-dvd. my question is would it actually work, oh will xbox software need to be updated with the correct codecs to play blu-rays also.

As far as i'm aware its the 360 that does all the 'faffy' parts such as decoding so I can't see that it would work with just replacing the drive....

i can't see the software being able to play blurays......yet. but when the new 360 with bluray onboard then i would imagine the software updates would enable it

You can plug the HD-DVD drive directly into a PC running Vista so the XBox only decodes as a PC would. Although most of the codex that Media Player uses is on the XBox I doubt that they will ever release one that is blu-ray compatable. That is until they give in and release and blu-ray drive add-on. The other option is to put the HD/BD drive into your PC and use Media Centre via XBox to play it on your big TV.
