External USB 2 HDD for my movies & music?

Just about to look for an external HDD to connect up to my 360 for movies/music etc. but want to make sure i'm doing the right thing before buying.

Will mainly be DVDs & music i put on it plus some photos, is there anything i should be aware of before buying?

I know i'll have to format it as Mac HFS for 4GB+ files like WMV-HD.

It's HFS+ not HFS but yeah, any drive will do.

You mention that you will be putting DVD's on it, well the 360 wont be able to play them unless you convert them to .wmv or Divx/XviD

Nope the 360 wont read .vob, .iso or MPEG-2 files so the only way to get DVD's to play on the 360 is to re-encode them.

Re: External USB 2 HDD for my movies & music?

Do You think the 360 will ever support playback of the vob files?? I have tried converting some using freeware software to xvid and it worked remarkably well, although picture quality was reduced due to film size going from 3.7gb down to 800Meg.

Re: External USB 2 HDD for my movies & music?

What's the playback quality of Divx files compared to their DVD original like?

Would be using a 42" screen.

All depends on what settings were used when the Divx file was created.

If space isnt an issue you could probaley make a file that has the same res and bitrate as the original DVD or you could reduce the res and bitrate making a smaller file but of reduced quality.

I suppose you would have to do some tests yourself and pick a setting you are happy with.
