Upscaling through Onkyo 605 trouble

Please can someone help. I am running componet out of my xbox 360 into my onkyo 605 amp, then running hdmi (1.3) out into my samsung LE40F8. I have the xbox set to output at 1080i (as a 1080p signal doesnt run through amp through component). I am getting a picture but when I press the info button on the tv it says the output source is 720 for the games and hd dvd's and only 576 for normal dvd's. How come it isnt upscaling?

DVD's will only upscale using VGA or HDMI.

I thought that only worked straight to the tv? The amp is meant to upscale component & composite inputs.

It doesn't upscale it upconverts (composite/component to HDMI).

Re: Upscaling through Onkyo 605 trouble

Apparently this is a known problem with the 605.

I too have one of these. Signals inputted via component in 1080i are downscaled by the amp to 720p as part of the de-interlacing effect that the video stage has when converting component to HDMI.

I don't think there is a work around for this. Lots of comment in 605 owners thread in the amps section of this forum (just search for Onkyo 605 and it should come up)

I was looking at this as well and posted on this area of the forum about the possibility of getting a cable that allows non-elite consoles to output in HDMI.

As the 605 will just pass through the signal from HDMI without any interference this seems to the only work around without changing to an elite console.

The cable in question comes from a company called XCM. I was trying to find out if anyone had actually used one and what it was like.

The general response to the use of such a cable was why bother if you can input to the TV with component?

I think for us its use might be beneficial because of the downscaling from the amp.

Personally however, I struggle to actually see the real difference between 1080i and 720p. It's the old argument of interlaced vs. progressive. The only way to tell if the signal is better through the amp via 1080i would be to compare using a component input (720p) and this cable (1080i).

But not sure if i am prepared to pay £50 for this experiment.

If anyone knows more about the cable then let us know!
