Help me...I may be stoooopid

I bought a broken xbox 360 from ebay as a project....It came with no accessories....I've managed to get the machine fired up with a pc power supply unit....the following symptoms exist
1 powers up with 4 red lights initially
2 3 red lights flash as the fans start to speed up (1, 3, 4)
3 2 red lights (1, 3) flash and the fans settle down
My question is...before i run out an buy an AV cable, Controller and game....is the above behaviour normal in the absence of the cables and controller

Hi...

I know the 4 red lights is because there isn't a video lead connected, if that helps.

4 Flashing Red Lights = Loose Cable Connections or in this case no cables !
3 Flashing Red Lights = RED RINGS OF DEATH, Xbox is screwed !
2 Flashing Red Lights = No Idea ?!?!?

If it has any red flashing lights then i guess its either broken or soon to be.

2 red lights according to Microsoft seem to mean...

This behavior occurs when the internal temperature of the console exceeds the acceptable limits. You may think of this as too hot, overheating, and so on.
???

Must have really fried. Unless this is what was designed to happen when you switch a 360 on with no cables.

Linky.
