Simple 360 Questions from a Newbie

Does the 360 allow you to copy and play Div X films from its hard drive?

Does the 360 upscale .avi files and DVD's?

Can you get the falcon chip in the Premium and Elite? How do you know you have one?

Is their anything better about the PS3 .avi playback over the 360?

Not sure you can copy them to the hard drive, but you can play them from a USB pendrive/hard drive or CD/DVD

It will upscale DVD's. Not sure on avi's though

Can you get the falcon chip in the Premium and Elite? How do you know you have one?
Yep, the falcon is available on all 360's now. Easiest way to check is that it has a 175w power supply. This will be listed on the box.

Is their anything better about the PS3 .avi playback over the 360?
Can't help you with this as I know nothing about the PS3
Hope that helps

It now supports playback of DivX films.

Does the 360 upscale .avi files and DVD's?

It does upscale SD DVD's via (VGA/HDMI I believe, not sure about Component), don't know about .avi's.

Can you get the falcon chip in the Premium and Elite? How do you know you have one?

No idea how you can identify the later chipset in consoles but a quick search on this Forum should give you some idea.

Is their anything better about the PS3 .avi playback over the 360?

Not as far as I know.

Yeah, bear in mind though that a newly bought 360 might still be older stock with the older processor. My girlfriend bought me a 360 premium for Christmas (bought it about 2 weeks before Christmas) and it’s an older model.

Like Desmo says the new ones will have 175Watts on the box label, the older type (like mine) will have 203watts.

Mine lives on wooden floorboards with gaps in the cracks where there’s a good draught coming through so I’m confident it won’t overheat. I’ll start getting nervous towards the summer though.

Thanks guys, but the biggie is

Does the 360 allow you to copy and play Div X films from its hard drive?

The Hard drive is used for :

1. Dashboard and game updates
2. Game saves and downloaded content
3. Live Arcade games
4. Game demos/trailers etc
5. Movie downloads from the marketplace

So if you arent planning on downloading films from MS and dont need to store lots and lots of demos etc you may not need it.

I have a 20Gb drive and usually have 5-7Gb free, less if I have some demos downloaded.

Re: Simple 360 Questions from a Newbie

Forgot to mention that you lose about 6Gb for reserved space (Dashboard updates I presume) so a 20Gb drive leaves you with 14Gb anyway.

I dont have a problem with my HDD at the moment, but if I bought a lot more arcade games I would start to run out of space to download the odd demo and if I couldnt maintain 5-6Gb free I dont think I would be able to watch marketplace movies (not that I have yet).

Some elite consoles have been shipped with the falcon chip that I know of and they are 203w so that isnt always the case. I bought my 360 a couple of months ago and have been looking for an easy way to find out what chip I have and I have read that there is no way of knowing without opening it up and taking a look for yourself (unless its listed on the net), but you can find out if you have the new heatsink or not by looking through the air vents.

I know, but it's generally the easiest way to get people to check for 175w without going into loads of other things

What about premiums?

I assumed the lower current PSU played a part in achieving less heat. I'm no EE though so that could just be totally wrong.

What do the two different heatsinks look like?

I have the premium and on trying to find out if I had the new chip I found on the net that half of the lot mines came from were the newer chip and the other half were the old chip (stupid I know) but they should all have the new heatsink. Here is how to find out if you have the new or old heatsink http://benheck.com/08-02-2007/see-if...cious-warranty , if the link is not ok there is a video of how to do it on youtube.

Dashboard updates are stored on a flash ram size of about 32MB. Thus you can instal updates on Core consoles.

About 500MB of HDD is used for Xbox1 games I believe.
