Question Does Xbox 360 Progressive Scan via Component

I ham currently connected to our LCD TV via the component leads and set to HD. (using Red/Green/Blue)

BUT I am getting slight zig-zag lines on curves and angles in games so assume the XBox does not do progressive scan which would eliminate this.

Is there a similar issue using HDMi?

Re: Does Xbox 360 Progressive Scan via Component

You may want to take a browse through the FAQ which answers questions like this.

In summary though, I think you're getting progressive scan confused with anti-aliasing issues. Component cables offer the HD resolutions of 720p (the p is for progressive), 1080i and 1080p and depending on what your TV can handle, you can use any of those resolutions. HDMI does not offer a picture quality improvement unless your TV does not handle component well.

The "zig-zags" you see are otherwise known as jaggies, which usually appear on diagonal lines where the pixel edges are visble. This is nothing to do with progressive images, but instead related to resolution and a process called anti-aliasing (or lack of) which smooths out these jaggies.

How noticeable the jaggies are depend on many things, including how close you are to the TV, what resolution you're playing at, how big your TV is and which game you're playing. Sit close to a big screen TV at a low resolution and the jaggies are more noticeable. The best solution is to sit further away, and increase the resolution (though going past 720p won't make much difference). Some games also have more noticeable anti-aliasing and higher resolutions, making jaggies less visible.

Make sure you have the switch on the component cable switched from SD to HD also!

(w00t for me being in the 7k club!)

Re: Does Xbox 360 Progressive Scan via Component

Currently running Xbox at 1080i there was no option for prog scan. (at least I didn't see one)

Don't have any issues with our DVD player using prog scan at 1080.

Although I have to correct you prog scan does eliminate 'jaggies' as jaggies are also caused by miss alignment as only half the picture is displayed at any one time (you can't see this) as without prog scan the picture is displayed in odd and even lines seprately but not at the same time.

Prog scan however displays the whole picture in one frame so there is no miss alignment and therefore no jaggies.

However I will play around with resolutions as our set is upscaling to 1080 as the jaggies are fairly minor and as you say could be casued by anti-aliasing.

Re: Does Xbox 360 Progressive Scan via Component

I think the issue you are describing is the "flicker" effect you get with interlaced images. Changing your settings from 1080i to 720p should solve this for you.

The term "Jaggies" is usually used to describe stepwise representation of a line that should be straight - a product of resolution, improved by anti-alaising. Progressive scan doesn't improve this.

Set your Xbox to 720p, then see how you get on.

Ok check here for a good example of the improvement of Progressive Scan over an interlaced picture even with anti-alaising.

Just remember Component IS FOR progressive signals, another words to display progressive (before HDMI), you would have connected, for instance a prog DVD player to whatever via component....doesn't matter about the resolution though, it's whether or not it is interlaced or progressive

Re: Does Xbox 360 Progressive Scan via Component

Hi Tom,

Your link confirms what I thought. The effect you are describing is the flicker caused by interlacing. Setting your Xbox to 720p will solve this.

Computer bods use the term "jaggies" for something else (as I have described above), hence the confusion with Munkey Boy.

Let is know what you thnk of your picture once the box is set to 720p.

Re: Does Xbox 360 Progressive Scan via Component

I replied to the other thread as well regarding similar issue with below

Well had a play around ast night with settings using both HDMi and comoponent AV.
when selecting 1080P with component screen goes blank and reverts back to 1080i so I assume my set can't display 1080P

When using HDMi the 1080P option is grey'd out and cannot be selected so I assume my set is telling Xbox that option cannot be displayed.

Can use 720P ok with both inputs although picture looks softer than 1080i.

So would expect only true 1080 HD TV sets rather than 720 HD ready sets can display 1080P.
