How do I get 1080p output from the Xbox 360?

Hello all,

I just bought a Samung LE40M86BD from Dixons and would like someone to clarify how I can get a 1080p signal from my Xbox 360 (as my TV's native resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels).

I mean is it possible to get 1080p using the component cable or do I have to purchase a VGA or HDMI cable?

My Xbox 360 doesn't have HDMI but I'd be tempted to trade it in for an Elite if it meant I could get 1080p.

Oh and lastly, will I see any visual improvements in games over 1080p as I'm aware that there are very few games that were designed for 1080p? I don't care about watching DVDs as I don't have the HD-DVD drive. I'll buy a 1080p HD-DVD player sometime in the future for that.

your tv will do 1080p with the component leads, and no,there is no real improvement in 1080p,from 720p,as most games are only upscaled.

Are you sure you can get 1080p fromt the component cable? According to Microsoft, you can only get video output in 720p or 1080i, see here:

You definitely can, 100% sure for games. However, HD-DVDs are 1080i max, and DVDs 576p max. Most TVs cannot accept 1080p via component though, even if they are fully 1080p TVs. HDMI may be the only way to go.

OK, so assuming I just use the Xbox for gaming, would I get a better picture through HDMI over component? I understand HDMI would allow for a digital to digital connection without an analogue conversion.

If your TV is good then there shouldn't be any difference, and if there is any difference it would be so minor it wouldn't be worth the hassle of swapping the machine for.

I have a 1080p Sharp LCD, i'm running my 360 through component, When i set the 360 to output 1080p it reverts back to 1080i.

I'm pretty sure you cannot get 1080p through component.

You can.

Maybe your TV cannot accept 1080p over Component.

Your tv will allow 1080p through component leads.
the reason i know,i owned one of them a few months back.
and as for movies(dvds),the tv has a pretty good scaler,so i wouldnt bother about it.

the XD1E series only allow 1080i with component leads,as it shared the port with vga,but to be honest, there isnt any difference with 1080i,and 1080p,as there isnt any(well apart from 2,really)games that are 1080p@60hz,on the 360,and the sharp does an amazing job of processing.

Re: How do I get 1080p output from the Xbox 360?

I have a similar/same issue(already started thread should have read this first) can't get 1080P only 1080i via compnent.

1080P will give better picture quality as 'jaggies' are eliminated due to way the picture is displayed.

I will try scaling down via component to 720 and see what happens and also try HDMi (only have 1 input hence using component).

Re: How do I get 1080p output from the Xbox 360?

Well had a play around ast night with settings using both HDMi and comoponent AV.
when selecting 1080P with component screen goes blank and reverts back to 1080i so I assume my set can't display 1080P

When using HDMi the 1080P option is grey'd out and cannot be selected so I assume my set is telling Xbox that option cannot be displayed.

Can use 720P ok with both inputs although picture looks softer than 1080i.

So would expect only true 1080 HD TV sets rather than 720 HD ready sets can display 1080P.

Well, yeah...1080p is for a full 1080p TV. There are some 720p and other set that will accept a 1080p signal but thye just downscale it anyway.

Not true.
only tv's that have resolutions of 1920x1080,can have the ability to show video through inputs at 1080p.
but not all tv's can show 1080p through component, some can,and some cant.
its just the way the manufacturer makes them.
and couple that with the fact, that, can your tv,process images correctly.
if it has a lower end scaler/processing setup, then it can lack somewhat in the quality dept.
some tv's are better at de-interlacing video than others.
somwhat like the Sharp XD1E series,1080p over hdmi, looks no different at all from 1080i through component, with no signs of jaggies,or interlaced artefacts.
