Xbox 360 - HDMI 1080p problems - faulty console?

Hi everyone,

Had my 360 for about a month now. Now this is probably only a minor issue, but I want to see if anyone else suffers from this. I'm not using this setup at the minute - but am considering going back to 1080p output shortly so thought I'd double check.

I had the Xbox360 running through 1080p output, which my TV downscaled to 1680x1050. It's a Samsung 22" TV/Monitor jobby. I played some games on it, and was reasonably impressed with the quality.

However, I then tried to watch films on it. I assume the console is upscaling the SD DVD content to HD 1080p, which is fine. BUT what happens is that about every 10 seconds, the screen is filled with garbage. This happens with ALL of my DVDs (all of which are originals, and the console is in no way modified).

The best way I can describe it is by finding a picture of near identical noise from the internet, which I have uploaded at the bottom of this post.

Does this suggest my console is faulty, or do other people have this issue?

For reference, I was using (for video output):

Xbox 360 Arcade edition, with 256mb memory card and 20GB HDD
Wilko's own brand HDMI lead (not gold plated, but £5 - couldn't complain)
Samsung SM225MW 22" Monitor / TV

At the moment I'm using the VGA output, with a Gamelink cable, basically so I have Phono outputs to connect to my headphone amp. I am querying this 1080p issue though as I am considering getting some decent Component cables instead, which should support 1080p again.

I dont know if this helps, but have you another HDMI cable you could try. I had a problem with a ghosting/screen burn image on my PS3 using a cheapy cable. Until the other day when I got my New Elite I tried the Xbox Elite HDMI cable on the PS3 and all image problems have gone.

Re: HDMI 1080p problems - faulty 360?

Now I'm totally confused, I always thought that you'd get the same picture quality no matter what type of HDMI lead you used?

I can't imagine it's a cable problem because it's literally a screen full of noise which is very close to the picture I attached below, and because it occurs every 10 or so seconds (not exactly 10 seconds, but near enough!) it sounds like a faulty console.

I'm wondering if anyone else has suffered from this issue

I'll probably capture a video of it on my phone later and upload it to my webspace, it's odd.

Re: HDMI 1080p problems - faulty 360?

Have you tried using component lead (red green blue) to see if you get same issue?
Unlikely to be your cable as it's a digital signal and not analogue so cable type won't make any difference. (It's only realy an issue with long cables and screening.

Won't matter what HDMi lead you use as it's a digtial signal, it'll eihter work or it won't.

Re: HDMI 1080p problems - faulty 360?

i agree the cable should not be the problem it is probably the hdcp decoding software either on the xbox or the tv if possible try and update the tv there have been alot of issues with not compatible tv and dvd players in hdmi connections that were resolved with updates to the software either in the tv or dvd player

Well it will either work, or not.. or it might work intermittently like the OP. Like Tom said the signal either gets there and you get a picture, or it doesn't and you get pixelation, garbage, dropped frames etc or, if its a completely knackered connection, no pic at all. Its often intermittent problems a good example is the picture on Sky when you get really bad weather when you loose some data, but not enough to get the 'no signal' message.

More expensive HDMI cables get you better BUILD quality, but not picture quality.
