Optical Cable ?

Will a optical cable from my TV to the optical in port on my amp give me sound on my X-box which is connected to the TV directly via HDMI?

That's an *ahem* bottom-backwards way of doing it. You won't get surround sound doing it this way either.

Get an audio dongle and run HDMI to your TV with optical going directly from the 360 audio dongle into the amp.

I tried running it all on HDMI, it worked but the picture resolution was not great?

Do you mean one of these?

Xbox 360 HDMI Cable - Xbox 360 - GAME.co.uk

and then buy a optical cable?

It's a lot cheaper at Amazon

Xbox 360 HDMI Cable (Xbox 360): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

Does your amp handle HDMI or not? If so, there is no need for a separate optical cable as HDMI will carry 5.1 audio. If not, then yes, you'll need to buy a separate optical cable (nothing too expensive though).
