Anyone tried the X Clamp fix?

My 360 is freezing and producing vertical lines down the picture so I expect it will die soon.
Has anyone here used the X Clamp solution with success? Is it a long term fix or a way to prolong the life for a few extra months?
I have no problems doing the job as I have built PC's no probs.
Also looking at the kit itself could the parts not be found in a DIY shop, just looks like nylon washers and screws to me, correct me if im wrong?

If you know what you are doing and have no warranty you might aswell try to do it and I suspect you could get superior parts from a DIY store if you know what you need

Re: Anyone tried the X Clamp fix?

Fixed mine about 2 and a half years ago its worked perfectly up until yesterday when 3 rrod returned, sending it back to microsoft this time at an extortionate £80! in the hope that they will replace it with a newer chipset and hopefully a reliable 360 if such a thing exsists my console was an original launch console manufactured in october 05 so im outside of the 3 year warranty period for the rrod.

Well if youve done the fix already you should be charged 80 pounds for having the cheek to bust the warranty then still want MS help.

Re: Anyone tried the X Clamp fix?

I actually fixed it just a couple of months before microsoft anounced the three year rrod warranty extension so it was already out of warranty when i fixed it only for it to fall back into warranty a couple of months later.

Re: Anyone tried the X Clamp fix?

Cheers peeps, im going to give it a go. I switched the console on just now and it now had RROD.
Mine is a launch console so well out or warranty. If the clamp fix will not work I have a mate that has a spare 360 with knackard DVD drive so can buy it off him and use my DVD drive.

At least I have 2 cheap options to try before having to try and find the money for a new one.

Wasn't the 360 launched in december 2006? So with a 3yr warranty it makes it valid until December 2009? Your console (based on this theory) is still in warranty against 3RRoD so get yourself over to http://xbox.com/support and register it online and submit it for repair! Mine got sent last week and is already on its way back!

Nothing to lose apart from a couple of minutes of your time by checking online, if its in warranty ATM I think Microsoft are sending out new consoles instead of refurbs (going on a few people's comments) so well worth it rather than an X-Clamp mod!
