How to replace the drive on a 360 elite please?

I've trawled the internet and there is a LOT of confusing and conflicting information. Basically my son's drive is faulty and needs replacing. It's out of warranty but we have a drive to use as a replacement. As I understand it the key from the existing unit needs to be copied onto the other. Can this be done on a pc please? The faulty drive is a Lite-On and the replacement is a Philips and BenQ.

Any help very much appreciated.

no help on here for that, as its classed as modding the console, and flashing the drive, which you would have to do, is not up for discussion.
