5.1 sound and not high definition tv

Sorry if this has been asked before, I've been through the faq and I'm not quite sure if my question has been dealt with or if it has, if I understand the answer.

I have an old non hd telly so I connect to it from my xbox360 elite through (I think) s-video - the lead with 3 cables red, yellow and white.

How do I connect this to my surround sound system? I have an optical cable but no optical out on the xbox or the cable.

I've been looking for cables, I know the HDMI cable comes with an optical out port, but I can't seem to find the one I need for my set up.

Thanks for any help.

I am glad that someone actually posted in the right place instead of messing up the boards over, again.

The answer is in the dongle. You need the Audio dongle that comes with the elite. You plug that in then plug your optical cable into that. The other end then goes into your speaker system.

Re: 5.1 sound and not high definition tv

I don't believe mine (an elite) came with an audio dongle

I have one of these, but I think it came from a high definition cable package I bought when using the console at my parents house:

Obviously that can't work in conjunction with the standard definition cable I use, because they go in the same port.

Why would the OP need to get the component adapter? The post states that they connect using the standard Composite cable.

Re: 5.1 sound and not high definition tv

If he is using the standard def cable, then he can use the component which game do. This has a Optical on it and it can be used either with standard yellow red and white or component HD Green Blue ect.

To connect the Xbox 360 console to a digital audio system, follow these steps:
1. Follow steps 1 through 4 in the "Connect an Xbox 360 console to a high-definition TV" section or in the "Connect an Xbox 360 console to a standard-definition TV" section.
2. Connect an optical S/PDIF cable from the AV connector on the Component HD AV Cable to the digital audio input jack on the receiver or on the TV.
Note The Component HD AV Cable does not include an optical S/PDIF cable. The Component HD AV Cable only includes the optical connection port. Therefore, you may have to purchase an optical S/PDIF cable separately. The S/PDIF connection port is located at the end of the cable on the base of the AV connector that you use to attach to the Xbox 360 console.
3. Turn on the Xbox 360 console. In the System section, you can change the audio and the digital output settings. Select the appropriate digital audio setting for the system.

Thanks very much for your help

just to clarify, is this: http://www.game.co.uk/Accessories/Xbox-360/Xbox-360-Component-HD-AV-Cable/~r327030/

the component cable to which you refer? It's the only one I can find on the game website.

Yes, that's the one. If you look at the product details tab it lists all the connections including the optical 5.1 output.

Re: 5.1 sound and not high definition tv

Right, just to end this thread on a happy note, I have now bought the cable and everyone seems to be working brilliantly.

Thanks very much for your help everyone.

Now there'll be no more sneaking up behind me in MW2!

Could I connect to my HD TV using a HDMI cable and then use one of these to get an optical cable into my amp?

Thanks

I have bought something similar to the plug picyured above with an optical socket on, I wanted to just use this to connect to my amp and leave the xbox connected to the tv using my normal hdmi cable.

Now the xbox takes longer to turn on, probably because it has two cables plugged in and the optical bit doesnt seem to work.

I know its also a tight squeeze to plug them both into the xbox
