Oh 3 red lights back again

MS repaired the unit a while ago & a friend who does repairs has done it about 4 times but guess what Yip there back.
Been on MS website & the standard warrenty has exspired & they want paying for it not happy really peed off with MS & quality of the console(never had a prob with normal xbox still going strong).
I was thinking maybe it's time to replace the console with a new one or even might go for the elite model this time instead of having it fixed every month.PS3 MAYBE??
My worrys are that i'm going to basically get a new unit with the same anoying problems ie: red lights etc then sending to bloody MS all time.
Work colleges are saying the new models are better and less prone to 'ring of death' etc. Is this true?.
Some people say you have to check the date on the console is after Sept 09 & that the power brick is lower wattage etc??
Do i get a elite or just the core console and use the old hd or say sod it and try the PS3???? COME ON CHAPS HELP

Looks like its the elite then with these prices
