disc unreadable

hi guys, last night my 360 stopped reading discs although it does start up fine, no worries i thought i`ll just pop down to pc world with my receipt where i bought it three months ago to be told i must send it back to microsoft to fix !. I knew this was the case with the RROD and for consoles that are outwith there first year but with it being only 11 months old i assumed i would just be able to swap it ? - obviously not !, i`m sure they should just replace it surely, what happened to statutary rights !

edit : is it worth using one of those laser cleaners on it ?

Re: disc unreadable

My laser started doing that after about 3 months and i had to repeatedly open and close the tray to play a game. If you take it back to where you bought it they should give you a new one or store credit as it is not fit for purpose. They should not send it to MS. I got mine from ASDA and it was not a problem.

Re: disc unreadable

Got mine from Argos three months ago and have a similar fault, they have also said to send it away for repair. UPS collecting tomorrow to take to frankfurt.
I rang microsoft and they said its normal practise to send for repair, he thinks the laser is damaged. It will play some games but not others, currently on 3rd copy of fifa10 which will now not play as it has a circular mark on the disk from the laser ??

Re: disc unreadable

The SOGA simply states a reasonable time period for a exchange to be offered, in the case of PC World and many other retailers they believe this to be 28 days. As such they are within their rights to only offer you a repair after that period and any argument you may have that 3 months is reasonable would have to be proven in a court which is unlikely.

The one thing in PC World's service they don't advertise to customers is that in the event of the console not being back in your hands before the console has been under repair for 28 days you would be entitled to a exchange or refund.

Buy a lens cleaner would be your first try.

Second phase is to open the console and remove the DVD drive, open the drive and get a cotton bud and some alcohol to clean the lens directly.

If this fails then you have to replace the laser usually.

Should all the above seem too difficult then look at any local repairers or it's back to Microsoft. You could potentially also go the SOGA route (covered in FAQ) and try to claim against Sainsburys for the product not lasting as long as it should.

I was getting a similar error. If I put any disc in I'd get the "reading disc" message, which would immediately revert to "open tray" and the disc wouldn't run.

I fixed this by standing the console vertically, or upside down. Not ideal, and the drive is probably on the way out, but for now it's working :P
