Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Just started happening two days ago, and once it froze and had rrod. Only one red light though. But the freezing is getting annoying, anyone have a way to stop it?

Its a Elite, around 10 months old.

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Do you have the new dahsboard?

If so, go to the memory settings, and clear your system cache. Come back if that doesnt work.

If that doesnt work can you provide me with an error code?

If it isnt showing one on the screen try this -

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code

* Turn the Xbox 360 on, and wait till the red lights are flashing.
* Press and hold the sync up button, while holding that button press the eject button.
* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will go back to the red flashing lights.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

* All four lights flashing - 0
* One light flashing - 1
* Two Lights flashing - 2
* Three lights flashing - 3

You can figure the error code this way if it does not show one on screen.

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

What do you mean it messed up?

An E64 is a problem with the DVD drive or a bad update, before you ring MS try this -

How To Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error.

1. With the console off, press and hold the sync up button.
2. While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console
3. Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.
4. During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.

E68, not 64. Its a problem with the hard drive. I removed it and it gave me the 3 rings. It keeps switching back from 3 to 1 lights and the controllers wont connect.

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Gosh your not having a good time are you.

E79 is a HDD error, again.

My best idea is to try another HDD. If that works then your current one is busto mate. Do you have a friend who will let ya try their HDD in your console?

If it doesnt work, it sounds like its an internal thing. How do you have your 360 lying, vertically or on its side?

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

No, it worked fine for months and never froze, and this happened out of the blue. I have it on its side, because the biggest air vent is on the bottom. I called MS and they are sending me a box. But I just retried it and there was no rrod, it just froze while the starting xbox screen was coming up. I can probably get another HDD though.. Ill try it.

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Ok 1st off, unplug ALL cables and take the HDD out.

Pop it in the vertical position, it actually cools better like that.Plug the cables back in after giving em a clean (with a dry cloth/tissue), give em a blow too, and the actual ports on the 360. A hoover works well.

Turn it on and leave it on for about half hour.

Turn it off, pop the HDD back in and report back. Were gunna fix this ;P

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Yeah. Thats why were doing it this way, I think its an internal problem. Just be sure to have the 360 in the upright position. Dont wrap it in a towel or any of the other nonsense ya might read about.

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Some people like taking apart and fixing cars, I like taking apart and fixing 360's!

Usually do it in the flesh though, thats why this one is so frustrating!

You didnt move it whilst it was on did you?

There is no evidence of that being true

The console was designed with both in mind.

OP: Seeing as its not even a year old, try calling the retailer to see if they will repair/replace/refund you for it as its faulty (shown by the error code) otherwise you should be able to get it fixed under warranty from MS - eg not pay a penny

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

Hardly a fair test there are other things to factor in

There is no evidence for which (if at all) there is a difference or benefit from having the console either way

Anyway back on topic, why when the OP mentioned the console is not even a year old did you not mention the retailer/MS?

Pretty much look after it in keeping it clean and in an open space

Every once in a while clean the dust from around the console so it doesnt block up the air intakes/exhausts
and then dont block those ventilations holes up by having it stuck in the back of a cupboard or something

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

I open mine up and clean it once and every so often, but normal folk dont like to do that.

I honestly dont think you can 'prepare' for it mate, if you get it, you get it. Im a conspirator ya see, so I dont beleive for one second its about how hot it gets.

As with any electronics though, the cooler the better.

The best way to realistically keep the console cool is to have a low ambient room temperature and sounds crazy, pop it in the vertical position and raise it up with something by about an inch.

If Ash knew how the insides of the 360 worked, or what the components look like then he wouldn't be arguing with me.

Re: Xbox 360 keeps freezing..

You cannot make crazy claims like that though

Do you know that the main cause for RROD is the solder melting between the mobo and the main components which is why a proper re-flow will sort it out

Keep it where air is allowed to flow around it and without dust clogging up the ventilation holes and enjoy it
