Xbox 360 Customisation - Painting 360 Case/Accesories

Ok folks this one is pretty simples. 1st off be sure to have prepared your parts before painting - Xbox 360 Customisation - Wet Sanding Tutorial

You will need

  • Aerosol Paint (Plastikote and Krylon Fusion Paint seem to give best results)
  • Primer (To prepare and protect the plastic)
  • Clear Coat Lacquer (Aerosol)
  • 500-Grit Sandpaper (400 is fine to use is you still have it)
  • Patience!
Ok here are the steps.
  1. Prime case/parts with selected Primer, leave for 1 hour.
  2. Using the Sandpaper VERY lightly sand the case in a circular motion.
  3. When finished apply the 1st coat of Paint.
  4. After 30 minutes apply the 2nd coat of Paint
  5. Just for good measure, make yourself a sandwich. I like Ham, Cheese and Cucumber.
  6. After 30 Minutes apply the 3rd and final coat of Paint.
  7. Now wait a few hours. 4 - 8 hours is good, the latter being better.
  8. Apply the Clear Coat to seal your work and leave to dry overnight.
All done! Right a word of warning, many people think that a draughty cold environment will help with the drying process but they are wrong! And they pay for it with an ugly result.

For best results prepare in a warm room. This may be hard as you dont want to gas yourself out but unless being done in the summer the outdoors is too cold. When drying overnight a good place is an Airing Cupboard.

Good Luck! You can also use this thread to post up tips and pictures of your own work!

Re: Xbox 360 Customisation - Painting 360 Case/Accesories

I dont have any of it mate. I have my Dads 360 which I am currently repairing, Im hopefully going to convince him to let me make something of his! Im thinking a Bioshock/Fallout Colour Scheme.

I prefer to stick to LED and Case Cutting Customisations with my personal Consoles.

Im seem to have deleted my red one and I sold it a few months back

Im currently in the process of sorting out a case swap into the Lian Li Chassis. It going to have a custom cut panel and custom LEDs. It will cost me 180 but Im theorising its going to be worth it!

Yeah it was supposed to go over the heatsink but I decided to get more airflow over the drive.

My Next case mod is going to be off the hook.

Watch this space!

PS I forgot to apologise for my crap pic!

Can you recommend any particular brand of paint that would match the black of the controller?

i normally use halford spray-paint, or you could use vinyl spraypaint also known as vinyl dye and then once it has dry top it of with some acrylic lacquer.

hope this helps.....again

edit:just have a look around halfords and take your controller normally they can try and match it.

just a suggestion but i use rit dye on plastic remote control car parts, you drop the white plastic parts into a pot of hot water with the dye colour you require, works ace, just dont know if the white plastic used on the xbox parts would be dyable.

As said in the 1st post, Plastikote and Krylon Fusion Paint are the preffered choice by the 'modding' community. I personally would go for Plastikote as it is easier to get hold of.

Halfords paint is ok, if you dont have much money and dont mind a so-so end product.

I'm thinking about modding a broken 360 that I have been given. I would like to paint it silver, but I'm unsure about prepping the case beforehand, as I have noticed that the top part of the case has a metal insert in it (Like an RF shield) It seems to be glued to the top of the case. Is it ok to do away with it, Or do you just mask it off when spraying? Many thanks : )

General consensus in the modding community seem to be that you can just pull it off and bin it.

Thanks for the info. If I bin it, won't this cause the xbox to "clash" with other electrical equipment around it? And when I paint the case, should the inside (and leading edges) of it be painted as well?

The metal shield is held in by a couple of "melted" posts that are part of the upper case. I normally just squeeze at these points with a pair of pliers til the melted edges come off, then the shield should just slide away. Then it is indeed time for the bin.

It serves a purpose i guess but i've never had trouble with using a 360 without one inside.

With regards to the painting, any part of the case that can be seen should be painted, as well as that little bit extra to ensure none of the original colour can be seen.

Thanks. Do you need to mask off the vents on the top of the case and how do you go about painting the side grills as they have lots of holes in them as well? (Rubbing them down must be a problem!)

EDIT: Do you really need to sand down the primer after you apply it? What about sanding down the top coat and lacquer? I've bought some 1200 grit paper for sanding down the paint and some 600 grit for cleaning up the parts for painting. Will this do the job? Thanks : )

Nicely done.

Just to clarify, the metal casing is a farady cage that is there to prevent electrical disturbances. When I removed it all it did was mess around with my free-view.

I dont have free-view no more so no issues, still as long as its 2 metres away it wont affect anything

I wish I had kept the "Faraday cage" now! I was thinking about keeping the modded 360 under my TV, but it seems that will now be a bad idea. Has anyone else removed their "cage" and had problems? Thanks

Try it, it doesnt always mess with it.

If it does, some well placed tin foil does the trick. Find on your tv where the freeview receiver is and just stick a piece of foil over it. If you are lucky it wont be underneath any thing important.

If I do have some problems, are you sure it's ok to put tin foil in my 360? It just seems a bit McGyver to me! (I'm sure you're right - no offence)

EDIT: Any idea how long it takes for the smell of the paint to wear off after you spray a 360? Thanks : )
