Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

Surprised to see no review thread for this game yet after popping on to log my vote, so here it is.

So what's your opinion of this game, does the fact it's clearly designed around co-op and multiplayer put you off, or is that the true genious behind the game?

Do you find it a bit short, or is the are you loving the repeated playthroughs thanks to the randomness of the director meaning no two games are ever quite the same?

Pop your vote in the poll and if you wish to share your more detailed thoughts on the game then add a few comments to go along with it.

Please no poll spoiling folks, we're all adults here so no need to behave like pre-teen fanboys.

Re: Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

To get started I'll add my own vote, can only be "outstanding!" for me.

This game is just so much fun that it's been giving me the regular late nights that only the original GoW before it inflicted.

I have to admit I haven't really touched the single player, that's not what this game was designed for, but the online co-op is just pure gaming bliss and to me is just a classic example of the main reason why I love gaming so much, it's fun with a capital F!

Probably my only reservation after playing the demo was how the game would hold up to repeated playthroughs, would I get tired of it? The simple answer after pilling countless hours into it is a definate "no chance!" Just so adictive and if you can get three other regular players then it's pure gaming bliss. I'm still perfectly happy playing through the game on normal difficulty but those tougher difficulty levels are going to add a huge challenge and will take alot of persistence to get through, and this is one game I will be determined to do just that(and I don't usually like being challenged too much).

The director really is a stroke of genious IMO, it really is the secret to one of the games main strengths, replay value. If the enemies were placed in the same areas each time then for sure it would soon become repetative, but the fact you never quite know what to expect keeps the game entirely fresh and I think for the average person, if you get hooked with your first play, you will remain so for a very long time.

Aside from the co-op(the main mode IMO) and the single player(where bots take over your team mates) the multiplayer verus is also something pretty special. 8 player humans versus infected is something so different from just about any online game I've played before that I love it. Taking the roll of the infected bosses is fantastic fun and it really does round off the package a treat, something I really expected to be a discraction of an afterthought really surprised me with how well it plays and how much fun it can be.

Oh, and one last thing, the "take a break" feature in the online co-op, wouldn't be without it now, phone or doorbell rings, no problem, select "take a break" and the AI will take over your character until you return and pull the right trigger, at which point you jump straight back into the game, damn useful(and Idle:Tetlee is pretty good too).

So there we have it, the weakness of single player is a complete non-issue for me in these days where I prefer to play online. It was never meant as a single player and just as some classic games are unaffected by not having an online mode, the same principal should be given here(in fact less so as it can be played single player, and can still be fun played that way too). Take the game as it is, a straight up multiplayer blast, and it's just perfect IMO, sits right beside GoW(1) as the best multplayer experience I've had!

Re: Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

Wasn't to sure about the game at first, didn't have a clue what to expect i.e in terms of will it play like resident evil or like condemed.
Graphics are good, and the number of zombie on screen is amazing.
My only gripe is its not long enough.
(i say this but i have only got to the hospital roof, which i'm guessing is the end ?)
It does have repeatability but in my eyes needs to be played with people who
  1. talk
  2. play as a team

I agree. i love the way sometimes it gets to the point where you actually communicate and work well as a team, its gutting when someone dies and you run around hoping they spawn in a nearby cubboard

I voted outstanding, but thats an underating of it IMO

The roof is the ending of the 1st of 4 chapters... with more along the way...
and if you think they're short... up the difficuilty... i dare you to complete a campaign in less than 5 hours lol.

Shame that you already voted the game as "average" on the basis of the game not being long enough, when in fact you haven't even got a quarter of the way through it yet.

we completed expert on all 4 campaigns now, we did the last one which was blood harvest this morning, it took us 4 hours 11 minutes to do that campaign.

yesterday it took us 7 hours just to try and do the final chapter on it and we still didnt do it, so i guess we just got our plan right this morning.

Outstanding!

The best co-op/online game I've ever played.

Slick, balanced, Polished, hidden depth, a Joy to play.

Roll on the DLC Valve!

Great when played with people who are willing to play as a team - irritating if you get stuck with someone intent on either running off on their own or shooting at you instead of the zombies!

Re: Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

Going to hold off until Ive had it a bit longer before I vote but after a weekish playing I would give it a 9. It would be a 10 if there were 8 campaigns but 4 just seems way too short. Versus makes the game seem bigger though, its good for a quick blast now and then.

Definately wait until you've tried playing on Expert before you vote, a huge challenge(and hugely rewarding too) and really does overcome any issues of the game being short IMO(took us around a total of 35 hours to complete the game on Expert alone!). Not only that but this game is built around replayablity(unlike most games), with the director making it so that you never have the same experience twice.

I always try to wait a good 3-4 weeks after buying a game before voting as my opinion usually changes after that time.

I have 3 RL mates who own this and I'm waiting until we are all on to get the expert achievements so looking forward to that.

Re: Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

I ended up giving it a 10 because it's a breath of fresh air. There was a lot of truly great games out when L4D was released but you could say that they are similar to others already released COD WAW is just another COD although its still a great game and looks stunning. GOW2 another GOW1, Fallout another Oblivion etc. What is this like? Nothing else out there so because it is just so fun to play and it is unique it earns a 10 from me.

Valve also know how to make a multiplayer game. GOW and COD you cant pick which map you want to play, what is that all about? This you pick ya map pick ya difficulty search for a game what a few seconds to join bam away ya go. How it should be.

Also the way the characters will shout out "pills here" if you look at pills or any other item and if your going the right way your character will shout "this way" or "through here" or even if you see a team mate being chased your character will shout "behind you", I just think this is kind of revolutionary as well.

It is a very good game co-op and versus is really good its the only valve game i can play that doesnt make me go to the bog to barf so thats a bonus
Although its a solid game and it really is a blast wih friends i really think its lacking in depth there is only so many times you can play the maps on all difficulties i long for this DLC to be released thats taking so long.

a very kind 9/10 from me

Re: Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

For those not completely sold on left 4 dead, consider the following...

1) You MUST play any online campaign or Verses game with a headset so as you can work as a team

2) Play the campaigns on expert (with friends). Make sure you ALL have headsets and you'll love the challenge on offer.

3) Appreciate that not everyone 'gets' the point of the game. I've lost count the amount of time people play without a headset and just run off on their own or decide that eveything on the level has to be shot. This can be really frustrating, but for every game like this you'll have a gem of a game and no doubt add your team-mates to your friends list.

4) Join the AVF L4D gamertag and play with people who play the game as its meant to be played.

The thing with L4D is that its got alot of hidden depth that isnt obvious on your first couple of games. Give it time, play with the right people and you'll fall in love.

In my opinion STILL the BEST co-op/multiplayer game Ive ever played!

If you play campaign for a little while then you'll constantly have good backup. There is no game like L4D for making good teamwork essential.

Got this game on date of release and it's barely been out of my console since... simply the most fun game in ages. Great for a late-night marathon with friends or a 30 minute pop on and play!

Can't wait for the DLC and hoping that'll keep me entertained for another 6 months!

Personally I think it's the best game on the 360. Valve did it again; half-life, cs, portal. Keep em coming

Re: Left 4 Dead: Xbox 360 reviews

got a nine from me, really good fun game, only marred sometimes by unsporting players and a lack of content. hopefully the dlc will push it to a nine, but even single player the game is great fun and playing with friends is just a fantastic way to waste a few hours.

Being a mod you should know the PS3 fanboy rules that every 360 exclusive game must have spoiler votes.

I went for 10 (Outstanding) too. The first 10 I've given, I think. Plays really well single player and sets new standards for multiplayer IMO. Completely agree with the above.

And the number of times I've shouted "Ammo here!" only for my character to say the exact same thing a moment later. lol
