Fallout 3: a brave new RPG with a convincing world and captivating story, or did it not do it for you? Please vote in the poll and leave comments in the thread once you've played the game enough to judge.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

Outstanding!
One caveat though.......quite a serious bug that freezes the game. It has been reported to the game designers and they have patched the PC version. The xbox 360 version needs sorted pretty sharpish or there'll be a lot of returns I guess.

Amazing gameplay and truely expansive world.

Bummer that so many have been frozen out of play though.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

one of the games of the year for me (Theres just too many games to narrow it down to one). Anyway back to this game, i havent finished it but allready clocked up more hours than most games this year. Oblivion was allready a 9.5/10 when that came out and F3 improves on that by alot. Its easy to get immersed in and just wandering around i've come across lots to do and see. Love the vats system and the option to just run and gun if i want.

No freezes for me though i have fallen into a crevice that i couldnt jump out of, bit like real life i spose. Anyway in games of this scope i expect glitches tho this has much fewer bugs than other games.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

This is now my favourite game, having knocked Deus Ex and Morrowind down to second place.

I love free roaming rpgs with lots of different quests and I love shooters. I also love the VATS system.

It really is my perfect game. I have never put so many hours into a game in such short a time (over 20 - lots for me).

10 from me. All games should be like this.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

The game is outstanding and easily the game of the year. Sure there are more polished games such as Gears of War 2 and Games with amazing Multiplayer such as COD5.....But.....As a single player experience the game has everything. The story plays out like a long running TV show in the vein of Lost etc......with so many characters and different story threads there is so much to discover. The quests range from the fun item gathering type to all out warfare, often with 4 or 5 different ways of completing them. Everything from how you solve a puzzle to how you interact with a character can influence an event later in the game. The way you build up your charachter also re-inforces this. You can't add all perks to your charachter or max all abillites, you must choose very definite specialist areas for them. such as science for hacking computers (vital) or lockpicking (also vital). The quests serve to break this game in to nice chunks that can be conquered a little bit at a time, achievements are mostly dished out for beating these quests. This means that the average gamer could get the full 1000 out of one play through if they wanted which is a big plus from me.
Its not possible to cover everything in a little review on here but what I can say is that as a single player experience it is up there with the finest. A huge world to explore and an excellent story to uncover make it at the very least a game that everyone must try.

I spent 50 hours on this game and there are still a few things i didnt get round to doing. Its exceptional value when you consider it would take a casual gamer 6 months to a year to fully complete. It is the perfect compliment to COD4/5 Gears or whatever......Everyone should have a game like this that they can retreat to every now and then.

I'm off to put on my Wizard hat for Oblivion now........never thought I would say that a month ago !

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

Well I was sceptical about this as I got bored of oblivion before I even reached level 5......the combat was truly awful. But Fallout? Different kettle of fish. I absolutely LOVE this game. It takes a while to get going, but within an hour or two of play I was totally hooked.

The combat is great, the quests are great and generally interesting, and this for me is a first as I've always found single player RPGs to feel hollow and barren (used to play alot of MMORPGs). There's a real sense of immersion in playing this, with a very real atmosphere and a freedom to play the game exactly how you want. I've been delaying the atom quest currently as I can't decide whether to defuse or detonate, and I'm hovering between the "shall I be good or bad?" question. I'm generally good, but that said I've murdered the odd person to get some equipment that I wanted. The beauty of the game is, you can play it howerver you want and though your actions have consequences, never are you pushed down a certain route.

I mentioned the combat and though not as slick as something like COD4, it's still very satisfying. Nothing better than sniping a savage from long distance with a carefully placed headshot - and the VATS system is good and never instrusive as I initially thought it would be.

GOTY for me so far

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

After playing this a while I've given it a 'very good' score. I found myself getting a little bored further into the game and not wanting to jump in and play it anymore. Graphics look great, but I just can't seem to really get into it. Maybe I should give it more time, but I can't see myself going back to it somehow.

Loved it. I just did the main story, but I plan to go back to it when I get enough free time to devote myself to it. Well worthy of all its praise.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

I'm about 15-20 hours in, not too far into the main story (got to GNR) and I've done a few quests - absolutely loving it, it's really hooked me. I love the combination of adventuring and combat and the sense of scale. I normally avoid RPGs, as having 4 kids I didn't think I'd have the time to play them properly. I only got this on rental from Lovefilm (free trial) because of the Eurogamer 10/10 score. Very nearly sent it back without playing having completed and being disappointed with Fable 2. Boy I'm glad I did chuck it in the Xbox. I've played it till 2am 3 or 4 times, which I haven't done with a game for a very long time. There's so much to do, this game offers great value for money. At the moment I'd rate it as Outstanding, however I'll wait to see how the main quest plays out before providing my final score. Oh and don't forget, there's DLC coming just to put the icing on the cake. Fallout 3 has even got me thinking about trying some of the other RPG games - I might be a convert.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

It was between this and Fable 2 and I must simplicity of the interaction with NPCs in Fable 2 won me over. If I had nothing to do with my time but play games I would jump at Fallout 3 as it does look like it could be very rewarding.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

Outstanding game and GOTY for me by a country mile.

The atmosphere, and the total non linear game is completley captivating

This game has caused many a late night and iam off on it now for a bit. 50+ hours and downloadable content coming in the next few months, it will be hard to shift this from my xbox.

I know its all about opinions but who voted this worthless?!

I don't like giving out 10s because it suggests you can't improve on the game or that there's no easy room for improvement. However having played for 15 hours so very rarely thought 'oh the developers could have improved that without any trouble' i'm giving this bad boy a 10

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

I finally bought FallOut 3, played it for a couple of days and took it back and got COD 5. Now before you flame me to death I took it back because although I recognise it is a great game, it is too similar to Oblivion.

Obviously not in the story itself but in want you have to do. Aside from the main mission you go off and do lots of side quests which involve either killing someone/thing, finding something/s and bringing it back etc

I also didn't get on with the guns, again perhaps a side effect of excessive Oblivion playing. VATS kind of worked but seemed an odd addition to the game. Rather than being able to sneak around you just seem to get shot at from miles away.

On the plus side I applaud the design of the game; it reminded me of Bioshock’s design style with its 50's retro feel. The graphics were great and although not as pretty as Oblivion but this is obviously an apocalyptic landscape not a lush forest.
Everything also seemed to play more smoothly, load times between entering a building, no jerkiness when running through the landscape (see the 360 can do it just as well as the PS3 )

All in all a great game but one I just couldn't summon up the will to go through all over again. If you haven't played Oblivion and you like RPG’s then you simply have to buy this game.
But for me with 150+ hours of Oblivion under my belt it was like being offered an alcoholic drink after suffering from a massive hang over. You take one sip and then politely leave it to one side.

8 out of 10 (would have been more if I had never played Oblivion…)

Probably my game of last year, and one of my favourite games ever.

Looking forward to the DLCs now.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

never liked oblivion as i got bored after 2 mins so wasn't really expecting much with this but I did manage to play it for a few hours.

I enjoyed the fact it was pretty much up to you how the game panned out and I even done one of the early side quests. It also looks incredible some of the best graphics I've seen on the xbox but I had to give up on it for a couple of reasons, firstly like oblivion you spend a good bit of time wandering about barren wastelands with nothing but the wonderful graphics and the odd creature to pass the time, secondly the combat system how can a raider with a snooker cue beat the crap out of me while I'm blasting him in the head with a chinese rifle. he wins. nonsense, even if the gun neede repairing etc its a carry on and I've not got the patience to find out if my gun skills improve.

thirdly whillst wandering about the barren wastland a few times I was killed with no warning or was blown up again with no warning. I suppose thats what happens in real life but just a little to random for my liking.
and finally the exact point I gave up was when the thing froze on me as some kid was pestering me for help.
I can appreciate a good game and for fans of this genre this will do the trick but nah not for me beaky.

I was not a big fan of Oblivion either. However, I was determined to play it to see what the hype was all about. It ended up being a pretty big letdown to me. That being said, I know plenty of people that list it as one of their favorite games.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

Considering the game is "open world" so far for me it's felt very linear.

Completing the "Galaxy News Radio" quest requires you to venture off into the city, and the route you take is like a FPS from years 10 years ago, but replace dark corridors with dark streets (and subway tunnels), and all the junctions being blocked off by a (conveniently) collapsed building - the only thing missing is the corridor roof. I got bored half way through this quest and thought "sod it, I'll do something else" only I couldn't...

The premise of the game is fantastic, not as graphically impressive as it's trailers made it out to be, but not to say they're bad, but I feel there is little to no improvement over Oblivion.

6/10

You can fast travel to anywhere you've previously been on the map, so you could have done something else...

Perhaps you just got yourself into an awkward set of circumstances? My opinion is that the world is as open as you want it to be. I've got over 112 hours clocked up on it, and I only finished the GNR quest about 8-10 hours ago! The reason I've been taking so long is I chose to explore as I went, and stopped off wherever interested me along the way. Usually I'd start off with a specific quest in mind, and before I know it I'm off on some other random side quest, or exploring an old building...it's one of the things I love most about this game.

Of course everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I think a score of below 8/Very Good for this game is incredibly harsh.

Re: Fallout 3: Xbox 360 reviews

Ive never played an RPG befor (more of a bad company, pro evo man myself). I just dont know wether to dish out the money to buy a game that i may hate. To all you lot its great because you play these kinds of games all the time whereas i can barely be arsed to watch a trailer for most of them but this game seems different. It looks to have a good story line, half decent combat system and a massive world. Ive seen all the trailers and it does look fun.

The thing that makes me want this game is the bit where i saw you were a baby and growing up and stuff. Things like that i have no experiance of which would be kl as i can go into it with an open mind and wont have seen anything like it befor which could be a good thing like it could blow me away or i could just be like "Screw this, i just dont get this game".

What i wanna know is, is this game good for someone who doesnt have any experiance of an RPG game? Is it worth buying? Is it only rly good for those who have RPG experiance?

I think you'l find a few people who aren't RPGers but love this game. I tried one of the Final Fantasy games on the PS2 years ago, didn't like it and that was it until Fallout 3 - which I think I rated 9/10 or 10/10. 2008 Game of the year for me.

The baby/child bit is a very small part of the story, its also a way of helping you choose your attributes for the game such as skill levels etc. Its a clever and unique way of doing this. Though I didnt keep the game for long (Oblivion was more my type of game) it is a fantastic game.

Maybe take a look at some of the play and help threads over in the Fallout 3 forum.
