PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

The latest Pro Evolution Soccer game is out now, so what do you think to it? Is it still evolving or a step back? Good online, what's the new Champions League mode like?

Once you've played enough of the game to judge, please vote in our poll and leave comments in this thread.

Re: PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

Ive had all the ISS/PES' since the snes.

After playing this non stop since friday. I am happy to say its the best pes ever.

Its different and slower paced than the last one and needs getting used to (As the new ones always are) but once you understand the differences and change your style of play to suit it is brilliant.
The Be a legend mode is the main section for me. On top player it is a great challenge. The satisfaction of having a good game, or making an assist, or scoring a goal is fantastic. Several times I have cheered out loud when scoring or assisting. To me, if im that involved in a game then its a good indication of the quality of the game im playing.
Im at the end of my second season and am still on the bench! Im very pleased its not easy. (on the fifa legend mode my friend was england captain after the end of season 2 that sounds pathetically too easy to me.)

Online i have played 10 games and even on the german server i have seen no lag at all. only a few tears. which is annoying but nothing im going to cry about.

I voted for excellent as even the best can be improved.

Re: PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

Hey, I gave it a vote of Good. Here's why

Offline, very good, don't usually play against the computer but I like the idea of Become A Legend, the progress is just too slow for me though, it is satisfying scoring your first goal I have to say, mine was for West Brom (or West Midland Stripes to give them their proper name) against Man Utd in the 88th minute. It was sadly only a consolation goal but it did make me punch the air in joy, I was well chuffed. You do get great satisfaction from setting up good moves and getting in on the end of crosses. One thing that annoys me about is that the cpu rarely pass to me even in good positions grrr I know its set up for long term play but it takes about almost a season to get the stats up one point im sorry but I just don't have the time to play that many games (I know you can skip games and earn points but whats the point?) Now what they should have done is have you earn some sort of points that boost stats when you play online, even half of what you get offline or something.
Master League, never touched it, never will, hate playing the computer, its no fun, thats just me Playing offline against friends is where its at, found the game plays as good as ever, although ive played more online games than offline which is just the way things are going these days so the online is a huge part of the game for me and a lot of others im guessing.

Online, where do I start ? The server system is awful, being limited to servers of 100 at a time is madness, especially if you try to get a 2v2 going on, was hanging around with a mate for about 20 minutes trying to get a game going yesterday, in the end we just gave up and played the computer. For me the servers of 100 at a time have done nothing for the lag just makes it far more annoying to get a game going quickly.
As for the lag, ive had good and bad games, I will say even in the best games it does feel a little sluggish, plays differently to offline, have noticed players running past the ball when its passed to them and they can take a split second longer to come to life after ive changed onto them, it can really drive you mad at times.
The thing thats annoying me about the online is the tearing, it just shouldnt be there, its not there offline so why online? well im guessing v-sync is turned off online to help sort the lag issues. I guess we'll see when the patch comes out if its sorted or not. It is an issue, have seen so many people say it doesnt really bother them or its not really in the way, thats bull, it shouldnt be there end of story.

So, if you never intend to play online and only play mates and master league, cups etc... I dont think you'll be disappointed, on the other hand if you do play online, be it against random people or mates, you'll have a somewhat frustrating experience somewhere along the line.

Some may agree some may disagree, i'm merely giving my opinion. 7 out of 10 for me

agreed.... enjoying legends mode still making the odd appearance off the bench but yet to score... online is awful and whats with everyone picking man u / inter/brazil??? and the low corners hit inside the 6 yrd box nearly always results in a goal as the defenders can't react quick enough..... i have tried and scored twice but who wants to win games like that... a glitch..??? lets hope the online gets sorted....

Double tap RT when you're in space and the computer hits it to you 70% of the time.

Simply put its my favourite PES game since PES3 on the PS2. Be a legend is EXCELLENT and far, far better than Be a Pro on FIFA. After owning both FIFA 09 and PES2009, I can safly say PES is the better game. The variety on offer this year is what boosts it above FIFA, and the inclusion of BAL.

The game is just downright fun to play. Responsive, intelligent and exciting. Unlike FIFA it's not a chore to work for goal it's simply a joy. Multiplayer is as fun as ever as well. On a side note the presentation is excellent, the menus, art syle and music is a massive improvement on previous PES games as well as the gameplay finally being well tuned on a next-gen console.

I am yet to try online as I only have a silver sub at the moment. So I can't comment.

Gave it a 9 because -
Pros:
*Excellent gameplay - best since the PS2 days.
*Great variety of modes, with welcome new additions - hours of content to enjoy
*Multiplayer is as good as always
*Visuals and animation are stunning up-close
*Nice menu art style and much better music this time round

Cons
*Poor commentary!
*Teams not up to date / fake teams / kits
*Not enough choice of decent stadiums
*Crowd and stadium visuals/animations are poor in comparison to on the pitch.

Basically it has the same, relativly minor problems of all Pro Evo's but it doesn't detract from what is a magnificent game. Thank you, Konami!

Re: PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

I have given it a very good rating.

It is very enjoyable but I still find it poor that there are alot of scripted moments that continually favour the cpu. things like ping pong deflections that end up of the feet of the cpu forward 6 yards from goal etc.

On pitch graphics are surprisingly good, with some nice lighting, however the stadiums and crowd seem lifeless in comparison. Commentary with mark Lawrenson is truly awful and some of the crowd chants are obviously looped too quickly, resulting in stuck record.

Gameplay, though is great fun and I have scored some brilliant goals and some brilliant games that FIFA has never given me, hence my reason for coming back to PES after a 2 year absence.

All in all its on a par with PES5 gameplay and suprior in the graphics department (which is great for me because that was my favourite PES of all time).

Roll on Pes 2010 witha supposed new engine, should be good.

Re: PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

Worst game in the series for me really.

Feels like toytown compared to Fifa 09, lets not even talk about the online lol, offline does nothing for me either!

It's a shame but I think EA just capitilized on how weak konami are now.

Re: PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

I am absolutely astounded how bad this game is. Its just plain broken. I would love to be able to go through each point, but there are so many and I just havent the energy.

Its almost playable as a 4 player experience, when the AI is removed and left to human players. Referee is ****ing *****, and ruins most matches, but **** happens.

The single player is unusable. Its like the days with made up players. Nothing corresponds to how I expect players to react. Wow, I have no idea how the developers could release it without realising how crap it is. The AI reminds me most of World Soccer on the Master System. Its just got that feel about it.

Been playing a few more hours now, quite enjoying it, its almost comically bad. The legend mode, will potentially should be interesting, has even more bizarre tactics. My team is obsessed with possession, to the point where they will not play a longer ball, or pass to the midfield. I had a particularly odd game, where the opposition team had possession for the entire 2nd half. Of a 10 minute game. They literally did not shoot even once. They just played keep ball, passed around. Every pass accurate, not one went to my boys.

PES2009 is giving Vampire Rain a good run as the worst game made for this generation. Its plumbing some new depths

Anyone fancies a swap for FIFA, let me know!

Re: PES Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Xbox 360 reviews

For me PES2009 = Very Good.

The thing I find with Pro Evo is, with each new version I start off thinking I'm not gonna like it because it feels so different from the last but after a week or two it's as if I'd never played any other version.

Yes the commentary is still crap and the referees are still lacking a few brain cells but underneath it's still the same imperfect but loveable game.
