I finished this over the weekend. I voted for 9/10, a truly excellent game.
I played on Acolyte (easy) difficulty, and that was still challenging enough. This game is punishing, and I can only imagine what the harder difficulties must be like. However, punishing is no bad thing, as it forces you to learn the combat system properly. Even on Acolyte difficulty aimless button-mashing will get you nowhere fast on the later levels.
I don't play a huge amount of hack 'n' slash games, which is probably why I found it challenging, but I enjoyed it so much that I'm already halfway through another go around, and I am also looking forward to trying some of the harder difficulties.
What I liked:
- intuitive yet deep combat system
- Ultimate Techniques and Obliterations
- opportunity for massive enemy-levelling combos
- spendid amounts of gore and violence
- rock solid boss battles
- suitably bonkers story
Managing to nail a 100-hit combo with the dual katanas by chaining OLCs together is something else, and deeply satisfying
