Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 Reviews

So,the new game Frontlines:Fuel of War has been released, and gamers will have had a chance to play, and discover what the full game holds.
So, if you would like to share your opinion on this game, and what you liked/disliked about it,make a vote in the poll.

A 10 should only be given for a landmark game that sets new rules, a 9 for a truly excellent game without a fundamental flaw, and an average game that does things right but nothing special should get a 5 (not a 7 like some reviews would have you believe).

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 reviews

it's a nine for me just 'cause I can't think of a fundamental flaw. OK the single player game isn't that special & there may be a few technical issues but definately nothing to ruin it 'cause online it's transformed. Get two teams of even skill & numbers, a good connection & it's gaming gold IMO.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War [Xbox 360] - Reviews

I haven't played the single campaign as yet, but I have online. I feel this game has great potential online but for some reason it just doesn't feel right.
Only 1 game mode is available and that is Frontline, where teams capture bases and push the other team back, it becomes a tug-of-war senario.

If you dont form part of a squad you kinda feel like you are left without any real objective in the game. You capture a base, go to the next one and then find that someone has taken over the one you just captured.

There is something special about jumping in tanks, helicopters and planes, but after a hour or so it can get quite boring. Running around doing the same thing over and over again not being able to communicate with anyone unless in a squad negates most of the good stuff.

I look forward to some more game modes and maybe more objectives.

32 player battles sound great, but i got more pleasure from the small 8 player based games.

I give it a 6 for online only due to the lack of game mode/options.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War [Xbox 360] - Reviews

Well on reflection I can only give it 7. The single player is good fun, better than its given credit for but very short.

My main gripe is the lack of team balancing online; it completely ruins the game. If they can patch it they should, like yesterday.

Most games are ruined by complete lack of balance with most people just going on to the winning side.

Theres also a severe lack of choice with the online maps, no map rotation on the dedicated servers and more importantly very few dedicated servers (also issues joining them, although it is getting better)

Real shame as the game is excellent but they have made some real school boy errors with the online implementation.

When you get in a decent game with equal sides its brilliant amongst the best team based fps I have played on the 360. I was playing village for around 2 hours the other night and had some really good games. Most of the issues would be extremely easy to solve, lets hope they do but I wont hold my breathe....

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War [Xbox 360] - Reviews

I'm torn between an outstanding and a very good. There's no doubt to me the basic mechanic is just great fun, involving and encourages team play and the way squads, roles and loadouts work is just so brilliantly simple yet no-one seems to have thought of it before.

The maps are engaging, thoughtful and have so many nooks and crannies. Destructible cover is a nice touch. The GFX are generally functionally correct and decent, but not brilliant. Damn shame about not being able to see huge distances, but maybe the hardware just isn't up to that yet.

The single player is actually great fun, but I came into it on a low base: ie. everyone suggesting it wasn't any good. In some ways it's as great as CoD4, but I'm afraid the lacklustre AI just doesn't cut it - there's no way one of my guys in a tank should be parked right next to an enemy like they've gone shopping and only start firing at each other when I come close.

The online implementation is fundamentally brilliant though, it really takes all the elements of it's predessors, most notably Battlefield 2 obviously, and moulds it into a more refined whole. There are modifications needed, but I'm sure those will be ironed out soon enough judging from the staff responses on the official forums and so I wouldn't feel right marking down for the server errors, lack of squad leader chat or team balancing we're getting in the early days.

In fact I think I've made my own mind up there, but I'll hold off for another few days before I vote.

I give it a 8.

If they sort the dedicated servers then it gets a 9.

Enjoying this game offline/online more than COD4, probably get flamed for that comment but its my opinion.

Think its the freedom of play that swings it.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War [Xbox 360] - Reviews

Overall its great, but for me there are 3 issues with it.

* No Coop is the single player, what the hell?!?

* Lag on the dedicated servers, again what the hell? Makes it very frustrating

* No party/squad/matchmaking system ala Halo. Should be able to make a team and then join a game, simple. Too many games you join, invite a friend and then they get put on the other team. Alot of the time by the time they have swapped teams and you form a squad the game is almost over!

Apart from the above issues its really good, but they should have updated the online interface and not had it 5 years out of date in my opinion.

It's funny how people's expectations get raised. Coop in games is still a very rare thing, you can count on one hand the games that have it. It's a tough thing to implement. The same goes for the party system. I would love the party system to be implemented Live-wide - a requirement - but as of today only 2 games use it, H3 and CoD4. Rare things indeed.

As for dedicated server lag, I don't think this is the case, I have not had lag at all. Could it be your connection possibly?

Gears of War 1 and 2, Halo 1, 2 and 3, Conflict: Denied Ops, Army of Two, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2... I dont think coop is rare, any game where there is an AI squad should be able to implement it. It would improve the game alot for me.

I have Virgin's 20MB connection so I dont see whu I should be getting lag. Also two friends of mine experienced the same...!?

Like I say its a great game (I paid for it!!!) but it could have been improved, fingers crossed for a sequel

I think the games you list shows it is indeed rare, less than 10 out now, which from the 100s that are available is a very small proportion (not to mention you include games not even released yet!). It hardly makes it 5 years out of date as you suggested was my only point. And I still get zero lag at all on Sky Broadband at about 7 meg.

Agree there are some areas for improvement, but I get the impression we won't have to wait for a sequel as they are updating the game regularly. Some other dev teams could learn alot!

Have settled on a very good 8, this game is an essential play for anyone interested in online team based shooters.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 Reviews

Just got round to playing the demo of this after my 360 returned from Hospital.

Quite liked it and it ran like a dream with zero lag. I think there were around 16 people in the room I was in. Will probably give it a miss though as there's too many other games I want and am rather skint at the moment.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 Reviews

Right then, having completing the single player game(now going back through again for more achievements) and put a good amount of time into the multiplayer I think I'm ready to cast my vote.

Nice solid 9/10 from me and that's quite a score from someone that doesn't really enjoy console FPS games that much.

The single player game was short, but it was also alot of fun & I really enjoyed playing through the game. It made a refreshing change to not feel as though I'm being channelled through the levels, certainly not on-rails and I loved the freedom to approach and take my routes through the levels how I wanted.

Actually on my second play through of the single player game now going for my "stopwatch" achievements, then it'll be back for a third run for the "ironman" ones. For me it's one of those games I like the idea of replaying rather than thinking "hmm, can I be bothered with those achievements now".

On to the multiplayer, in short pretty fantastic, by far the best console FPS multiplayer game I've played and the fun factor far out weighs both CoD4 & Halo3 for me.

Variety by the bucket load, vehicles, drones, the different classes & skills go such a long way to keeping the game fresh. Also love the way you're free to switch classes mid game, especially useful to me when I get sick of getting pwned on the frontline, I can retreat back to safety and resort to killing people with drones

The team mechanic is very rewarding and for me I prefer the closed communication to the whole team, I'm only really interested in speaking to people within my clan(although I think 5 would have been the magic number for clan teams).

There are some niggles with the multiplayer games(sentry spawn camping for one), as with pretty much all games, but most of my frustration comes from simply being a bit crap rather than poor game design, that's unavoidable in any game. The fact the developers do seem to be striving to improve the game and are paying attention to peoples comments in the official forum is very encouraging(I wish all games developers cared this much). I've already seen some changes to the game in the short time I've been playing and if this continues the game will only get better with time.

The last mention(and perhaps most importantly) should go to the dedicated servers, very welcome in a 360 game and they do make a big difference for me. Now when I get killed I do feel it's pretty much purely down to my lack of skill rather than lag delay giving me poor hit detection(I'm looking at you CoD4!). 50 player games online on the Xbox360 is just something I never expected to see TBH so the fact that Kaos have managed to pull it off with such style(and with all that's going on with the vehicles etc.) is just amazing!

All in all I think this game is well worthy of a superbulous 9/10, not quite perfect but so much fun it ain't far off, pretty much as good as a FPS can get for me I think

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 Reviews

I feel obliged to write a mini review - and thereby bump this thread - to encourage those that haven't played the game to go out and buy it!

At the time of writing the special edition is under £20 at Amazon!

One point to note regarding my review: it is almost entirely based on the online multiplayer mode. There is a single player campaign but it is best considered as training for the multiplayer.

8/10 - VERY GOOD.

It was very nearly a 9 (and could even have been a 10!) but the lack of a party system and a few minor niggles mean the game is not quite perfect. (Yet. The developer, Kaos, seems dedicated to improving Frontlines - check out their status blog and road map for fixes and updates to the 360 version.)

The highlights:
- A solid FPS with tight controls.
- Great selection of maps (some of which are HUGE), all with a good level of detail.
- Dedicated servers for lag free games with up to 50 players online.
- Squad system is perfect for friends or like minded players.
- Lots of weapon loadouts, specialisations (EMP, ground support, drones, air strikes, etc) and vehicles.
- No kill cam.
- Prone!

Frontlines has its own unique game mode, which does a good job of simulating the tide of a battle. The teams start at opposite ends of the map and fight for objectives on the frontline. If you capture and secure your objectives, the frontline moves forward and new objectives open up. Lose control of the objectives and the front line falls back. A second game mode - Conquest - will be available as a free download in the coming months. Players will be able to fight over any objective on the map at any time.

What really makes the game is the depth of play. Whether you go lone wolf or work as part of a squad, there is always something to contribute to your team on the battlefield. Work behind enemy lines looking for drone operators, booby-trapping vehicles and generally hampering the enemy's advances. Or watch over an objective from your sniper position on high ground and direct your squad members below. Or EMP that tank, giving your air support guy just enough time to drop a precision air strike on it. Or put a drone high above an objective to highlight enemy soldiers on the mini map before an assault. Or jump in a helo and provide air support. So many possibilities and the more teamwork there is, the more oppotunities open up and the better the results are. Most important of all, it's all just plain fun.

This is easily one of the best online shooters on 360.

Don't bother wasting your time with Bad Company, this is a far superior online game.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 Reviews

tempted by what people say about this game and for £20 it sounds great....

Thing is ive just bought Battlefield and iam enjoying the single player as well as the MP.

I used to be in a position were i would buy a few games at a time but now iam trying to stop doing that as some games gather dust whilst i play others and therefore a waste of money! so i may have to wait.

Whats it like compared to COD 4?

Now when I get killed I do feel it's pretty much purely down to my lack of skill rather than lag delay giving me poor hit detection(I'm looking at you CoD4!). 50 player games online on the Xbox360 is just something I never expected to see TBH so the fact that Kaos have managed to pull it off with such style(and with all that's going on with the vehicles etc.) is just amazing!

All in all I think this game is well worthy of a superbulous 9/10, not quite perfect but so much fun it ain't far off, pretty much as good as a FPS can get for me I think
Have to agree with everything youve said, I also gave it 9 out of 10.

It really is one of the best online MP games you will find on the 360.

Waoolis - just go and buy it, it is so worth £20.

This game was the next game for me to beat after i have done cod4 on veteran mode, i really enjoyed cod4 single player and multiplayer.

with this game, single player is poor and multiplayer is fairly good. if i was going to give cod4 9/10 then noway i can give this game anything close to it, for me it made it 6/10. good game to play while waiting for other games or when bored and got no new games. worth to buy if you find it cheap, nothing over 15 quids.

I will compare it this way, i will pay 100 quids for cod4 and not pay over 15 quids for this game.

Thats my opinion after beating both games.

Re: Frontlines: Fuel of War Xbox 360 Reviews

£100 for cod? lol send me the copy you got!

Frontlines single player is so so. Multiplayer, excusing the flaws, is a timeless piece.

As a single player game we're talking 6/7 but multiplayer, if you put in the time to get to learn the ways and nuances of the game then it's easily 8/9.

Will write a proper review at some point soon when I vote proper

one of the worst games i ever played. it was for around 5 minutes, i tryed to like it and give it a chance, as some games require that, bioshock, singularity are few to name. but this.. hitbox does not exist, everything feels bulcky and physix are absent in this, if u hate someone, gift it to him/her!

Crikey, when I try to like games that aren't an instant click, I usually give them around an hour before deciding to put them back in the box. Wouldn't have throught you'd have barely moved away from the opening battle area after 5 minutes of playing. Doesn't sound much like you tried to like it to me, which of course is fine, just a rather conflicting comment

Great game back in the day - really enjoyed the multplayer. I could never control the jets though - usually just ended up in a cliff.

Getting really peeved off with BLops and its lag problems and decided to give this a go again the other night. Spent a couple of enjoyable hours playing online. Can't wait until Homefront comes out early 2011.

Almost picked this up at lunchtime for £7 but decided against it as I was worried about how many people are actually still playing it. Might go back though, thinking it could be a COD alternative for over the chrimbo holidays.

Still a few people playing! My mate and I were playing a couple of nights. Just look for games on the different servers that are available as you can usually find games involving anything between 18-36 players. Advice on finding servers can be found on the FFOW forums and is simple enough to folllow- even I managed it!
