Red Faction: Guerrilla - Xbox 360 reviews

So, the new game Red Faction:Guerrilla has been released, and gamers will have a chance to play, and discover what the full game holds.
Now, if you have played enough of this game/finished the game, etc, and have enough to form an opinion, and if you would like to share that opinion on this game, and what you liked/disliked about it,please make a vote in the poll.

A 10(Outstanding) should only be given for a landmark game that sets new rules, a 9(Excellent) for a truly excellent game without a fundamental flaw, and an average game that does things right but nothing special should get a 5(Average),not a 7 like some reviews would have you believe.

Note:Vote spoilers, and general silly votes(low scores),for no apparent reason, will be treated as vote spoiling, and either the member involved, will have the vote cancelled,or infractions will be given.

Re: Red Faction: Guerrilla - Xbox 360 reviews

Firstly, I think RF:G is one of the most underrated games of this generation. Although it received a lot of promising reviews early on, they were followed by a handful of pretentious reviews that marked the game down for having no storyline or lacking character depth. This game doesn't need a storyline - it's not trying to be something it's not. It's a third person sandbox shooter that has the best destruction modelling ever seen in a game and it's fantastic.

Firstly the single player. I have to admit that early on in the game I found myself playing the single player for an hour or so before saving my game and moving onto the brilliant multiplayer. I was struggling to really get into it, but I found the more I played it, the more I liked it. As I started to upgrade my weapons and got to grips with how realistic the destruction was I soon found myself losing hours to the campaign. I think the hallmark of a good open world game is when you set a waypoint on the map, but take an hour or so to get there because you get distracted on the way. This happened so much in RF : G. The side missions are varied (although I tended to avoid the driving missions) and good fun and the main missions were even more diverse.

The multiplayer is the best component of the game in my opinion. Not only does the destruction modelling make it's way into the online side of the game, but it is far more than a gimmick. It is integral to the different game types. Even deathmatch game modes revolve around destruction - don't bother outsniping the sniper - just take down the building he's in!! Another feature that adds to the multiplayer are the backpacks. Racks are dotted around each map holding the various backpacks allowing your player to access a range of special abilities. These range from extra firepower to the ability see through walls. My favourite is the Rhino pack - a temporary burst of energy that allows you to break through walls or send close by enemies flying through the air. Again , this is more than a gimmick. Your combination of weapon and backpack mean that you have to employ differing tactics. For example the Stealth backpack when combined with the shotgun makes you very dangerous as you sneak in amongst enemies before taking them all out with some well placed shotgun shots. There are six game types, 21 maps and it really is addictive.

Finally there is another mode called Wrecking Crew. There are an additional 10 maps for Wrecking Crew as you try and score as much damage as possible within the time limit. Originally meant as an offline party mode I didn't really bother with it too much, but there has been a recent patch that has added a 3-round version of Wrecking Crew with online Leaderboards. I'm now addicted to this mode as well and have already lost 5-6 hours on it and the patch was only released at the weekend.

John Davison on the Area5 show said that RF:G "over-delivered in every department". I couldn't agree more.

9/10

Re: Red Faction: Guerrilla - Xbox 360 reviews

^ Agreed. +1 for the quote too (he repeated it on the 1Up/ListenUp podcast too ).

There are a few small niggles that make it a "Very Good" 8 for me, but wow, what a great game.

The negativity in the gaming press leading up to the launch of the game was disppointing (most of which seemed to be fixated on the change in the franchise from FPS to TPS). That said, I really didn't like the demo; it just didn't grab me. I'm very glad I listened to the reviews here and bought it.

Re: Red Faction: Guerrilla - Xbox 360 reviews

A solid 8/10 for me.

The destruction engine worked excellently, as an engineer by trade I could appreciate the physics and structural analysis that must have gone into this game. The incremental damage was well modelled, I often chuckled to myself when I managed to finally tear down a massive structure, very often on top of a load of EDF and occasionally on my own head .

The weapon upgrading was cool too. The storyline was a little sparse but you did get a true sense of being a freedom fighter up against the big bully boys at times. Vehicles were fun to drive, I loved the walkers (brought back fond memories of Ripley in Aliens), there should have been more of them. The mayhem got a bit crazy at times during missions but it was very rewarding to finally reach a save point just when all seemed lost a few minutes before (hiding behind rocks to restore health doesn't just work in COD).

I didn't get too involved in the multiplayer but I did enjoy the matches I did play, very smooth experience, easy to find and set-up games, I didn't notice any significant lag.

All in all, a big thumbs up

Blowing things up with maxed out bombs is too funny, also if ur a bit of a builder and cant really demolish what u've made, heres ur chance! :D fell in love with this unfortunately only for 1 game run. still recommended!
