Borderlands (UK Release: 23 Oct 2009)

Can't seem to find a thread for this so thought I'd start one as it seems to be getting a bit more coverage in the press in the last few weeks.

Trailer here (with a great soundtrack which may make it look cooler than it is!)
Borderlands Video Game, SDCC 09: Extended Gameplay Trailer HD | Game Trailers & Videos | GameTrailers.com

Preview here
IGN: Borderlands: Mixing Genres

I think this started as a lot more gritty looking and they've gone for more of a cell-shaded look. While the videos don't make it look amazing I applaud them for going a different route than the traditional next-gen brown! If they get a nice balance of FPS, questing and online co-op it could be a winner.

Re: Bordelands Preview Thread

The latest preview video on the marketplace/dash looked fantastic The first trailer for this came out ages ago, and I remember being interested all the way back then after reading a few articles about it. Now, they seem to have taken it in a completely different direction, you're right, but it still looks very cool.

I haven't heard any different, and the trailer mentioned "87 bazillion guns," so it sounds like they've kept one of the more unique aspects: randomly generated firearms. As in, no one gun will ever recur.

Keeping my eye on this one.

Re: Bordelands Preview Thread

I haven't played any other Gearbox game before but I hear they are sound FPS developers so that seems like good news.

This game only recently came onto my radar until I saw a interview with Gearbox studio head Randy Pichford by Gaintbomb. I like the art style but the fact that there are so many guns seems very daunting.

Re: Bordelands Preview Thread

I've played the BIA series, although I must admit I was disappointed with Hell's Highway. However, in many ways I think a new IP is exactly what Gearbox needs to find some form again.

Does anyone know when this is scheduled for release?

Re: Bordelands Preview Thread

I was really looking froward to this but then they went down the cel shading type thing route.... why !!! From what i've seen it's a bit like Fallout 3, which is a good thing, but then with graphics from the 1980's.

Such a shame as the original videos looks so good.

Re: Bordelands Preview Thread

Cel-shading worked brilliantly for Prince of Persia and Afro Samurai. I think it could look great, if done properly. Depends on how it works with the gameplay and overall tone, though.

Spot on billy, if done right cel shading can make the game look brilliant, Crackdown and XIII are 2 more I can think of that looked great and were cel shaded.

From what I have seen of the game as well looks ace.

23rd October Billy. Hope it doesn't join the long list slipping into 2010 - I think Hell's Highway was long delayed wasn't it?

Re: Bordelands Preview Thread

Yeah, Hell's Highway slipped back by almost a year, I think... Hope that doesn't happen again! One of the achievements was to play HH on the anniversary of the launch of Operation Market Garden (17th September), but the release slipped even beyond the revised date of the end August 2008, so no-one's been able to get that achievement yet!

Ahhh Frontlines... Miss that old girl so I do... Is this being made by Kaos? I saw a video preview of this recently and it does look fantastic, right up my alley, there's something about blatting away into a monster and have a little +34xp pop up above their head

Used to play old text based MUD's back in the day so it's probably just nostalgic thoughts but they make me warm anyways lol

So Bethesda don't sue them for making a Fallout 3 copy.
I like the style personally, just hope the game lives up to it.

This is one of my most anticipated games of the whole Christmas run-in. I really hope it matches my expectations! I love the new art style, and the artwork for the 360 case is great

Just been watching a couple of trailers this morning, for Borderlands and Rage.....

Despite knowing very little about either game, I have to say I really like the look of Borderlands. I for one like the cell shaded look, and have often been tempted to buy Prince of Persia purely to take in the art/graphics. I didn't realise that this was due so soon, and has definitely been added to my 'watchlist'

Borderlands looks great Provided the reviews don't absolutely shred it, I'll definitely be picking it up. And I also love cel-shaded games when done right. Prince of Persia was one of my favourite SP games of last year, and it was a shame to see it overlooked so much. There wasn't much combat, but - for my money - that's what made it so great. Mirror's Edge, by comparison, had too much combat for my liking, which stopped it being full of the free-running awesomeness it could've been. As you can get PoP for under £20 these days, I'd thoroughly recommend it, with a word of caution that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Good video here:
Borderlands Trailer: Claptrap vs. Sound Guy - Shacknews - PC Games, PlayStation, Xbox 360 and Wii video game news, previews and downloads

Claptrap vs The Sound Guy (reminds me of Christian Bale vs the Photography Guy )

Hope this humour gets into the full game

Re: Borderlands (UK Release: 23 Oct 2009)

this is one of tiny number games being released this year (dragon age and alpha protocol are the others) that i am really looking forward to. thanks to this here thread i started to hunt around for details and i have to say the game sounds damn good. i am hoping it will be a fallout 3 sort of thing with the added bonus of an online co op play mode. heres hoping it can live up to my expectations. from everything i have read and seen so far it looks like it will but the proof will be in the eating of the pudding.

YouTube - Borderlands Character Trailer

Character trailer. They keep picking awesome music for their trailers which make them look even better!

I think is one of the games I think could have the most potential this autumn. I'm about to disappear to Asia for a few months of backpacking but am planning on picking up a whole bunch of games when I get back and this being one of the top ones. If they pull off the RPG/shooter with the co-op play then I could be hooked for months and I've been talking it up to all my 360 owning friends.

Re: Borderlands (UK Release: 23 Oct 2009)

I think the only thing which would put me off this (when actually playing - it's a definite purchase!) would be if they don't have enough 'stock' character models. I hate when you've only got about 5 or 6 different looking folks running about, hopefully lots of character customisation and stuff. Also it'll be interesting to see how the co-op stuff works, hope it's not like Fable2 where you get a random character imported to your game as opposed to your actual character, half the fun of making my char's look like a tool is if others can see them

Can't wait for this... The 10th of Twentembor can't come soon enough! (Curse ye American dates lol)

IIRC, there are just the four characters featured in the trailer a few posts above. Each has a specific back-story and set of abilities, and there is no character customisation in the intial set-up. I also seem to recall reading somewhere that each character can only be used by one person at a time (a bit like Left 4 Dead).

Re: Borderlands (UK Release: 23 Oct 2009)

I was really looking forward to this, but there fact there is no competitive multiplayer has put me off. Co-op is fine, but it limits when you can play the game as imagine it will be afr better in co-op than single player.

Co-op games are my favourite type, nothing better than playing through a game with a mate!
