HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines) (UK Release: 18 March 2010)

Completely bonkers story line, but Frontlines is a solid oh-so-nearly-great Battlefield-the-way-it-should-be FPS -- just try and keep that in mind and dream of multiplayer goodness!

More details/media coming at E3, but here's the press release in the meantime.

Quote:
Kaos Studios just announced Homefront, an FPS set in an America occupied by North Korea.

The game promises a story-driven single-player game as well as multiplayer, and will release for PC, PS3 and 360.
No release date has been given.

“Homefront isn’t about going to war on the other side of the world or battling aliens from another planet; it’s about fighting foreign invaders in your own backyard and defending your right to live,” said Kaos Studios design boss David Votypka.

“Homefront combines the unsettling notion of an occupied America with interactive, player-driven narratives to create a deeply engaging single and multiplayer experience.”
First showing at E3. Media expected later today. Press release after the break.

The War Comes Home in THQ’s Homefront

Baseball Fields, Strip Malls and Suburban Neighborhoods Become Battlefields in THQ and Kaos Studios’ Brand New Shooter for Xbox 360®, PLAYSTATION®3 and Windows PC

E3 Expo 2009

AGOURA HILLS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–THQ Inc. (NASDAQ:THQI) today announced Homefront™, a new First Person Shooter (FPS) from internal developer Kaos Studios®. Penned by John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn), Homefront is set ten years after the economic collapse of the United States and follows the American Civilian Resistance as they fight to reclaim their homeland from an oppressive North Korean occupation. Featuring a personal, story-driven single player campaign and a full suite of multiplayer options, Homefront is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. Homefront will be unveiled at E3 2009 in THQ’s booth – number 5300 in the West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“Homefront isn’t about going to war on the other side of the world or battling aliens from another planet; it’s about fighting foreign invaders in your own backyard and defending your right to live,” said David Votypka, design director, Kaos Studios. “Homefront combines the unsettling notion of an occupied America with interactive, player-driven narratives to create a deeply engaging single and multiplayer experience.”

“Kaos Studios is using powerful narrative and environmental storytelling to create a plausible, near-futuristic setting where the people of a once mighty nation must fight to maintain their existence,” said Kevin Kraff, vice president of global brand management, THQ. “This harsh backdrop will be the foundation for an emotionally-charged single-player campaign and an intense multiplayer experience.”
About Homefront

The year is 2027. The world has suffered a decade-long energy crisis, and economies have crumbled. Reduced to a mere shadow of the super power it once was, the United States became the target of a North Korean takeover. American malls, suburbs and city streets are now battlegrounds as the civilian resistance fights for freedom. Featuring a compelling single player story crafted by John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn), Homefront immerses gamers in an interactive and cinematic FPS experience where they will assume an infantry role or take command of a wide variety of aerial and ground vehicles. In addition to the single-player experience, Homefront will deliver a robust multiplayer experience. In a land stripped of freedom, the brave will fight for their home.

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

This is fantastic news!

I loved the first one, and used to play it regularly with a few AVFers. Great game and ther MP was spot on. The only thing it was missing was SP co-op play.

Hope they put it in this!

It was a very marmite game tbh, some people loved it and others thought it was rubbish. I thought it was good as it has dedicated servers for the mp as well as a squad system and vehicles and the weapons were pretty good.

You could also control remote drones (heli & tank) and roam the battlefield killing people that way.

There are still good games to be had jimi -- there are always at least a couple of 32-50 player games running.

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

i only played the demo for Frontline which sadly was the last thing i ever played on my 2nd 360 before it borked it for good. I then went to the dark/light side for a good 8 months so i never played the finished game.

Anyhow apart from looking dog-rough at times it did play very much like a hardcore Battlefield so i'm very interested in news of this game

Ah, the fun of teaming up in helicopters over the oilfields, when it was great it was bloomin hillaroius fun!

Great news this, will be very interested to find out more. I had huge admiration for Kaos Studios care and love of Frontlines, they really seemed to try and take on board any critisisms and ideas from their forums(take note Epic) and improve the best they could.

The dedicated servers handled the 50 player battles incredibly lag free, something I've yet to see equelled by any other 360 dev, just hope HomeFront get's more mainstream attention this time around as sadly never could fill Frontlines with AVFers

KAOS were responsible for DC on PC, (which is why Frontlines is BF familiar) which is one of my all time fave mods, so they deffo get my admiration for that alone, they should redo it as a standlone release I say for MP (Including all the maps)

I'd play that for sure

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

Yup, looking forward to this one, whatever about the naff storyline.

Big maps, 50 players, remote-controlled drones and other gadgets made Frontlines a great but under appreciated game, hopefully this might get marketed better and also avoid some of the big competitive releases.

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

An occupied America? That'll be the video game version of eighties movie Red Dawn starring Patrick Swayze then? The screenwriter for which was John Milius, who I hear today has written the script for this game, and is writing the script for the remake of Red Dawn next year. He also wrote Medal of Honor: European Assault.

He's also the writer/co-writer or director of such military-themed movies as Apocalypse Now, Flight of The Intruder, Clear and Present Danger, 1941 and Uncommon Valor, and his politics are appropriately right wing, so you can expect the details for this game to be professionally researched and created.

God, I thought I was the only one who'd seen it!

Great film really, I wonder if they will have that cool short-sword in the remake that Swayze used?

Good times!

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

It was repeated on some minor TV channel recently as well. I'd forgotten that Powers Boothe was the downed pilot in it. It only held my attention for about 10 mins though, it will benefit from being remade as long as they cast it astutely.

Yeah, wasn't sure a sword featured in Red Dawn. 'fraid you are the only one who's seen Steel Dawn. The video cover shouted 'cheap scholck' at me and I left it alone!

Some of the moments in that vid are in first person and if they are genuine bits of gameplay, this could be Frontlines with improved graphics and more destructible environments.

I've just reread a preview for this and I hadn't realised, but apparently this is a campaign game only, with no MP!!

Honestly, what's the point in that? No wonder they're paying John Milius to script the SP. It'll need to be great to have any success without MP.

Might cancel my pre-order now.

Got to agree with you no multiplayer is a big loss, I know it's not quite the same game but it's similar to Operation Flashpoint and can you imagine how sucessfull that would be without multiplayer competing with Modern Warfare 2 like this game will.

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

Where did you read that it had no MP Covert?

There is a review of the demo of this on here : Kaos On The Homefront -
The review says there's no MP but in the comments at the bottom there's a reply from a guy from Kaos saying that there is in fact going to be MP.

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

I seem to get getting mixed preview reports.

On Cheat Code Central (11th June, the preview I was referring to) it said:

"but where Frontlines tried too hard to divide its attentions between team-based multiplayer and a solo campaign (at the expense of both), Homefront is focused squarely on an immersive, cinematic, single-player experience".

Maybe they weren't fully informed or it's poor journalism?

On Team Xbox (4th June) it said:

"There will be multiplayer, supporting up to 32 players over Xbox Live. You will also be able to commandeer vehicles, including flying ones. The story will take you from the ruined suburbs of Colorado and will move west through the U.S., climaxing at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco."

All IGN (3rd June) have said is :

"The studio is promising there'll be a substantial multiplayer component to the game, but they're not yet revealing what it'll be all about."

So it looks like I just read the wrong preview.

Emergency over!

Re: HomeFront (by KAOS, makers of Frontlines)

I thought it seemed a little odd that there wouldnt be any MP, Kaos are too good at doing MP to leave it out!
