Ive nearly ran out of ammo just before

you meet the kidnapper on episode 2
but never had a problem with torches at all!
My trick is if theres say 2 taken i will hold the torch on one (not boosting it) while walking backwards until im able to shoot then do the same with the other, basically if you think you have time to 'torch' them with out using the power do so.

Another thing people might be doing is replacing the batteries as soon as they've just killed the last taken in that little battle instead of leaving the drained ones in to recharge after a few seconds?

Yeah if you do a little dance around the Taken then your Torch will recharge quite quickly, i'm guessing in Nightmare mode your Torch will either recharge really slowly or wont recharge at all

Just wondering as I'll be tackling it when I finish my current play through.
They have more 'darkness'. That circle/halo they have when you shine light on them takes a LOT longer to drain on nightmare. Plus they take double, sometimes more bullets than on normal. So, you run out of batteries and ammo much quicker. I never had a problem with running out of supplies on normal but because of the above issues it's really tricky on nightmare. The most difficult scenarios I've faced so far are when there's 2/3 normal taken and 1/2 of the big 'hunter' ones. Seriously tense! You have to be quick with your strategies and be aware of your surroundings much more I feel. It's way more intense, and it was already intense! Haha.

I've found big rocks to be very handy for this purpose - it helps to funnel them a little bit. I'll be utilising that on Nightmare.

I like to funnel them too, it's when you're in a big open space and you know you're surrounded, but can't see them - that's the scary bit.

The dodging mechanic is very well done too, had some seriously close shaves. Its very satisfying (and looks quality) when you pull it off.

Looking forward to Nightmare, and I haven't even finished Hard yet.

Those collectables are a pain as there is no way to know what you have missed as there is no breakdown of them for each chapter.

Anyway found a good site for collection junkies ie score-whores

Alan Wake – Achievement Guide - SwearingAtVideoGames

Complete with videos showing collectible locations.

Why not wait a while and pick up a copy cheaper from the classifieds on here? I picked up a copy for £25 yesterday.

Ah, how I wished that helped. I'm looking for the last thermos. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack... literally. So I really need a pic/video guide to find the last one to make it easier. I'd be able to remember if I'd got them better, rather than having to read vague whereabouts of them. Hopefully a good video guide will be out soon.

Damn you, Remedy. Damn you!

590/1000GS on Normal is not bad at all would have been 600+ if i picked up another 9 manuscripts and found 1 more radio/TV

I also just finished with a gamerscore of 590/1000. Was hoping to pick up the TV cheevo (only 1 to find) and the birds (killed 921) but never mind.

It was a good game while it lasted. A bit too short for a solely single player game. I will be trading this in at the weekend for red dead redemption. Cannot be assed going through on nightmare mode just to pick up a few more cheevos.

Are you kidding? Apart from RPG and open world games, this is the probably longest single player game I've played in years. Most SP only games only last 6-8hrs for one playthrough from my experience. Took me around 12hrs my first playthough, with a bit of exploring (how the game should be played imo). There's no way that could be called short.

Well I spent nearly 2 hours on the first episode last night, so really seeing this lasting some time. There was one last thermos I saw but didn't get, and it unleashed about 5 taken, and I had little ammo left (near the end of the level), but I think I gave the rest of the area a thorough scrub! Like others have said, it would have been nice if there was some indication (like on Condemned, Assassins Creed 2) on your progress of collectables for each level but it's a small niggle.

The best thing about the game is the atmosphere it generates - when you're creeping through the woods and get surrounded by the taken it's a genuine edgy experience.

Also have 1 tv to find - it's possible that we might have all missed the same one. I might dig around for some guides to see if I can remember which ones I've done and narrow it down as I'd like the 30G. I'm 4 kills short with the hunting rifle and 13 short with the flare gun so will go after those too - can anyone recommend a good place to get these? I'm thinking the Anderson's farm might be a good place for the flare gun as I remember there being a couple of flares. Hopefully it adds to the stats instantly and I can die and re-do it a couple of times to get to 50 kills. Does anyone remember if there was a hunting rifle around there or somewhere where there is one? Only 4 kills...

I think I'm on 530G so will be at 570 with the cumulative weapon cheevs and hopefully 600G if I find the TV.

EDIT: Found this which might help. I'm thinking maybe I missed one in Episode 4 though not sure yet.

just started episode three last night... I like the atmosphere in the game and can see the potential for dlc episodes being a good reason to hold on to the game after completing the singleplayer. I generally don't replay games one playthrough is usually enough for me.

I'm hoping there's plenty of dlc planned for this, the idea of additional episodes would make sense with episodic nature of the game. It would be a crying shame if it didn't happen.

The dlc wouldn't necessarily have to focus on Wake either...you could play as any of the other characters they developed - there is so much scope for expansion, I just hope its fully realised.

For the Flare gun, 1st chapter, as soon as you get it for the first time, grab it, jump down and 3 taken appear..just fire it at them, pause, reload checkpoint, which starts you right next to the flare gun..rinse, repeat.

Hunting rifle - chapter 5, first defend area, it's leaning up against a car just before the gate you have to stop the ambush at.

Same goes for most of the weapon ones, and flashbangs, as soon as you get a weapon, like shotgun or hunting rifle, it's usually a checkpoint, so just kill some then reload checkpoint.

Alan Wake - Play and help thread

Just completed on normal this morning, played most of it late last night with the surround sound on and lights off.

Some genuinely hair raising moments, being surrounded in the woods with just a torch for light is always a winner.

Enjoyed the game, cracking plot the sound, visuals and atmosphere were bang on and really enjoyed the voice acting too, did find it a bit too all the same though, 80% of the time walking through the woods doing the same thing.

All in all a well presented game with which could be classed a tad repetitive, won't play through again but then I never do, would recommend.

Thats fair. Also its good the DLC is being released early july. Think I might keep hold of this.

I think in time, if they come to release a second alan wake we will see alot of improvements.

I'm playing on Hard and there's been a couple of moments where I've ran out of ammo and just had to leg it. In times like that the dodge mechanic is a life-saver.

I thought Chapter 3 was amazing, until I got to Chapter 4 and that just blew 3 out of the water. I'm absolutely loving the episodic pacing to the game, it's really fresh, and it brings the production together really well.

I'll be hammering through 5/6 over the next couple of days before RDR, but I'm really glad that I picked this up. I almost brushed it aside due to some of the more negative comments on here (and in reviews), but I'm extremely happy that I didn't. I think it's something that everyone should at least try, because for me it's one of the top games of the year (along with ME2, BFBC2, GOW3, HR)

Got 1000G! :D Nightmare wasn't as hard as I expected. It's just right for a survival horror game imo. A few challenging places but it's never frustrating. Bring on the DLC.
