W7 laptop decided to not startup

Hi guys,
Earlier this evening my laptop was fine, closed it (although dint turn it off/log off/ anything) to go on Fifa on xbox.
Opened up laptop a while later just to a black screen, waited a while, nothing happened so i switched it off.
Now whenever I try to switch it on it gives me option 'start windows normally' and someyhing along lines of 'start windows repair'
Starting normally gets me to the stage off the windows logo and then stopping, while windows repairing a bar appears across bottom of screen which completes then to a black screen and stays there.

Atm, i've gone into BIOS settings and am doing a HP 'component test' to see if everythings working(mainly want to see if the HDD is working correctly..

Any ideas guys? (Bear in mind I am a computer noob)
Thanks

don't mess about with stuff just yet, power down completely by holding the power button, take the power adaptor out if used, give it half a minute then start up again.
i know this is the old joke but your ram and capacitors may hold a bad charge.

Start machine up and when it gives you the list of choices there should be one for 'safe mode'. Try it. Safe mode starts the machine using the minimum required to get it going. If it starts OK it means the core of the OS is OK.
Shut machine down again and restart it.
At the menu list again there is an option for 'last known good configuration(advanced)'. Try it rather than start windows normally.

IIRC mash F8 to get an option to go into Safe Mode.

Probably too late to ask but were you installing any new programs or Drivers on the day you were using it? Win7 has a habit of throwing the dummy out of the pram with drivers, Especially x64!! If you've got a windows 7 disk, use the repair function from that, If you use the image that's currently on the hard disk, the chances are it's corrupt and thus knocking you out of safe mode etc!
Another thing could be a SMART failure, although the disk may appear working, SMART errors cause trouble, Especially on a Mac!!!
